Felix Baumgartner, according to various sources, jumped from the highest height reported at 38,969.3 Meters above Sea Level and opened his parachute at 2,566.7 Meters above Sea Level making his total freefall distance 36,402.6 Meters. The time he was recorded varies from source to source with the shortest at 3 Minutes and 43 Seconds (223 Seconds). The Speed of Sound on Earth is 761 MPH. So, assuming Felix Baumgartner actually had a constant acceleration, i.e no drag coefficient. The Force of Gravity on Earth is 9.807 m/s2, and he fell for 223 Seconds. His highest recorded freefall speed would be as follows: (9.807 m/s2) x 223 Seconds = 21,447.526527 m/s. But, that’s not how physics works. Let’s work it out. Each Density and Maximum Terminal Velocity on the Tables are as follows: H(m) Pair (kg/m3) g VT(km/h) VT(mph) 0m 1.225 9.807 534.9275 332.3885 1000 1.112 9.804 561.3634 348.8150 2000 1.007 9.801 589.8143 366.4936 3000 0.9093 9.797 620.5658 385.6017 4000 0.8194 9.794 653.6224 406.1421 5000 0.7364 9.791 689.3686 428.3537 6000 0.6601 9.788 728.0094 452.3640 7000 0.5900 9.785 769.9265 478.4101 8000 0.5258 9.782 815.4520 506.6983 9000 0.4671 9.779 865.0419 537.5121 10000 0.4135 9.776 919.2586 571.2008 15000 0.1948 9.761 1,338.3125 831.5888 20000 0.08891 9.745 1,979.2947 1,229.8767 25000 0.04008 9.730 2,945.6925 1,830.3684 30000 0.01841 9.715 4,342.9952 2,698.6121 40000 0.003996 9.684 9,306.9953 5,783.0987 By following these steps and applying the given parameters, we determine that the highest reachable velocity during the freefall from 38,969.3 meters to 2,556.7 meters is approximately 702.1572 km/h or 436.3002 mph. And that is even giving him some extra umph by using the complete final density at 0 meters and the acceleration of gravity at 0 meters! Finding the change in air density (Δρ): The air density at the final altitude is subtracted from the air density at the initial altitude to determine how much the air density changes during the fall. Δρ = ρ(final) - ρ(initial) Δρ = 1.225 - 0.003996 Δρ ≈ -1.221 Finding the change in gravitational acceleration (Δg): Similarly, the gravitational acceleration at the final altitude is subtracted from the initial gravitational acceleration to find the change in gravitational acceleration during the fall. Δg = g(final) - g(initial) Δg = 9.807 - 9.684 Δg ≈ -0.123 Calculating the total velocity change (ΔVT): Using the changes in air density and gravitational acceleration, along with the given altitude difference, the total velocity change is calculated using the formula for change in velocity due to changes in air density and gravity. ΔVT = -Δρ * H * g + ρ(final) * H * Δg ΔVT = -(-1.221) * (38969.3 - 2556.7) * 9.807 + 0.003996 * (38969.3 - 2556.7) * (-0.123) ΔVT ≈ 309.3748 + (-142.1451) ΔVT ≈ 167.2297 m/s Finding the final velocity (VT): The total velocity change is added to the initial velocity to find the final velocity attained during the freefall. VT(final) = VT(initial) + ΔVT VT(final) = 534.9275 + 167.2297 VT(final) ≈ 702.1572 km/h or 436.3002 mph 436.3002 mph / 761 mph = 57.3324% Speed of Sound Felix Gartner was only able to reach 57.3324% the Speed of Sound on Earth.

The skydiver hasn't actually jumped from a spaceship in orbit around the earth of course - he's skydived from a helium balloon at an altitude of 39 km (24 miles) from the layer of the atmosphere known as the stratosphere. That's why this promotional advertising stunt for the Red Bull energy drink company was officially known as Red Bull Stratos - this skydive had nothing to do with NASA by the way. GoPro cameras with distorting wide-angle lenses were used to record the footage of this skydive, hence the very distorted and exaggerated appearance of the earth, making it look as though the entire planet was in view. In fact, the only part of the earth's surface that is visible in this distorted view, is the state of New Mexico in the USA. From his location over the state of New Mexico at an altitude of 39 km (24 miles), the nearest large body of water is the Pacific ocean about 1000 km (600 miles) to the west, and will obviously not be seen in the footage of this skydive. The use of the word 'space' in the video title is simply an example of 'clickbait', with the channel owner using this word in order to gain more views.
