I shot this video in South Indiana on a 98 degree Sunday afternoon at the Ford Fordson Collectors Association National event in 2017 I believe . The older gentleman was having trouble starting this Fordson model N (1936 I believe). I told these two that the old timers would sometimes belt start these tractors using their belt drives and a longer belt. I’m glad it worked out and they got it running and onto the trailer ok. It was fun to see everyone come together and help each other out.

My old dad had one of the blue ones , if you messed about with the H.T. leads when hand - cranking it , it would lay you flat out on your back , high voltage electric shock , so I think this one needs the magneto serviced or rebuilt , as not enough pure spark kick at cranking , these old classics are so basic there,s little to go wrong with them , mind you , cold spark plugs would do the same , take them out & hold them in your hands , to warm them up , if this works , use a slightly softer grade plug set . The magneto has an inertia drive mechanism between it & it,s drive sprocket , if that has got weak or just failed , the armature in the mag does not get the sudden fling past firing point it needs to generate a fantastic spark , when this is all o.k. you really wouldn,t want to be holding it ! Best Regards guys .

Notice that he twisted the belt 180 degrees , if he had not the motor of the stalled tractor would be cranking backwards

yes, but when using a rear pulley (which you can change direction of by unbolting from pto and rotating the mounting 180 degrees) it's also good to have a cross in the belt as you get more belt surface area on the pulleys and so it grips better with less chance of belt slip
