As 'n sersantjie met Dr Wouter Basson te doen gekry, baie vlugtig, maar sy nederigheid (as Brigadier) en gewone behulpsaamheid, goeie buurmanskap het 'n blywende indruk gelaat. Dit was by 1MH, jare later in Kaapstad op 'n afstand gesien. Hy het na my gekyk, herkenning in sy oë? Dit het gelyk of hy my gesig herken het ná meer as twee dekades.

These videos bring back so many memories, after 8 Sai and infantry school basic training I so wanted to go to 32bn but when I saw it was a third time basic training I decided not to. Ended up at Ondangwa 53bn for the rest of my 2 years. But I still wish I had gone to 32bn did 4 camps with Komadant Scheepers of 32bn what a sharp man he was.

Great interview with Capt Pienaar. However Unit 9 may not have been the first Rection unit that was established. I believe the first unit trained was West Rand which included members from the Vaal Triangle.

I don’t blame you for leaving YT. I deleted my channel back in 2020 due to censorship and other shenanigans. I have since put some content back up, simply due to the difficulty to reaching an audience on Rumble. I’d implore you to keep posting some stuff here in perpetuity, just to help build your rumble following. Keep the good work: you and FMR are great💪

Bless you Arthur. I was a little Boy in Arcadia Primary and then Pretoria Boys High seeing those beautiful F1s fly past everyday and my mind would always drift off to being in that seat and flying that Jet. It was not to be but it was what made me become a Pilot! So you were at the Time one of my childhood Heroes! When around 1990 (I think it was) I read about what happened to you and Major Ed Every, your names stuck with me, especially your Story! Now, so many Years later I have come to finally see you in Person and hear you share your powerful and so personal story!!! What an inspiration!!! Thanks to the Legacy Conservation Channel for these opportunities! Also loved the one with Martin Louw!… All you F1CZ Pilots of 3 Squadron will forever hold a very special place in my heart! Cheers!!! 🍻🦅🫡

Dr Basson oorbeklemtoon die sielkomponent en skeep die geeskomponent, wat die belangrikste komponent is, erg af. Die volgorde moes ook andersom gewees het, naamlik gees eerste, dan siel en liggaam laaste.

I am a 60 yo Australian and was on holidays in Vietnam recently with an SA mate, Andre, I have worked with this year and an old school mate of his, Gavin, joined us. They are both 62, had some very interesting stories to tell about their time doing National Service in the SA Army. Gavin was posted to 61 Mech and said he was there for Operation Mebos. He said Google it. I read the story. He was in a group that had to secure an area after a helicopter with Paratroops on board was shot down and then retrieve the bodies. That must have been very stressful at best. I also read the losses for Operation Mebos was 29 South African Servicemen Killed In Action 😢 during this Op in July/August 1982. I have since sent both Andre and Gavin KZbin posts about SA experiences in the Bush Wars. They have both asked me not to send anymore, as it is very emotional and upsetting to them. When I was with them, they reminded me of a lot of Australian Vietnam Veterans who have PTSD, of which I have quite a few friends. This was an excellent video and historical account of an extremely well executed ambush during Operation Mebos. It is interesting that Veterans run tours of the Battlefield sites. This is also done in Vietnam for Australians to return to their original Base at Nui Dat and Vung Tau. Many Aussie vets find this therapeutic and as some of my mates have said, put some demons of the past to bed. The Vietnamese being so friendly helps. I commend Colonel Jan Malan for encouraging this as a 61 Mech Veterans Association. We in Australia have the RSL - Returned and Services League, plus an associated group called Legacy to help families of Veterans passed and present. Well done to Jan Malan, Pierre de Jager and the Legacy representative Koos for an excellent presentation.

Thank you for your observations. Indeed, we were and are the forgotten heroes that stopped communist expansion in southern Africa, forced a democratic change and solution to Namibia and South Africa. What happened later is not our fault or concern. Legacy exists to give these men and women a voice. Most who spoke to us felt better because of it. I assure you, no one cared then but it seems a great many do now. Koos

Colonel, I was one of the Etosha rangers from Namutoni. We left there at the end of 1983 after my daughter was born. We used to visit you and your OC at Oshivelo and were given 5,56 rounds for our Mini 14's and bought cases of South African beer. That was during the time of RSM "Arab" Comrie. Good memories. Regards, Barry Patterson

Puma 164 was shot down during Op Uric, Mapai, 1/9/79, as described by Col Reid-Daly in "Top Secret War". We lost, inter alia, Leroy Duberly, national Rugby Fullback, and Lt Charlie Small, a highly respected engineer. I believe Preller Geldenhuys flew in Uric, and describes being 'lit up' by sophisticated Soviet anti-aircraft radar systems, including "Spoon Rest" and "Flat Face". Uric was one of the very few occasions when all deceased soldiers bodies were not recovered from the battlefield, due to the risk of further casualties. RIP

Made redundant according to affirmative action requirements. The SAnDF became became one big employment efforts in the early 90's, which saw an equally massive outflow of personnel. White soldiers that is. There would simply not be any further promotions of whites. The usefulness of any white skinned lacky ends sooner or later. Sorry, but I for one cannot find anything to be proud of in the South African new Defence Force.
