I can imagine long latencies being an issue for live performances. On the other hand, it's obvious to me, that working with long samples, that have to come BEFORE the original sound, introduce long latencies. That's exactly what happens here. Long tail of the hihat, and as soon as the sample ends, the snare sound comes. No biggie, in a mixdown or sound design session, where nobody is playing live to it.

I think you have valid points regarding the missing editing functions (!) and latency is probably an issue for some use cases. But I honestly bought it because it's more convenient to quickly try some settings and samples in a plugin than to browse my drum samples, find the right sample, edit and reverse it and than place it correctly in its own track. Just a quick way to up the sound for the lazy guy.

Thanks for your video. An option to reverse imported samples is one of the top feature wishes and good chance that we will implement it. You can put Snapback on its own channel, and route a sidechain channel to its audio triggering. Or duplicate the track and Solo the snapback and transient layers. Regarding latency: We tested latency for Snapback in Ableton Live, Cubase, Bitwig, Logic, FL Studio, and Pro Tools. Each handled plugin delay compensation (PDC) effectively - with the exception of UI compensation, as you show for Ableton Live, that becomes more apparent with longer samples. We also tested changing latency on the fly, and everything worked smoothly. A notable mention goes to Maschine: it has no PDC implemented at all. Bitwig has an upper limit of 2 seconds latency, so if you import a 2 seconds user file you hit that limit. Our included samples have 35ms in the Short category, while all others add 135ms. Beyond that, with the Snapback layer set to "Off", there is base latency of 27ms (required for Audio Trigger and Limiter), and 17ms in MIDI mode. Ableton Live has an ongoing issue that affects plugins relying on position-based processing after a latency-inducing plugin. While audio blocks are compensated correctly, position-dependent processing (e.g., beat-synced LFOs) can still be misaligned. This bug has persisted in Ableton for about 20 years. For our plugins, such as ShaperBox and Kickstart, this can be worked around by using audio or MIDI triggering instead of relying on position information.

Hi, many thanks for your reply. Before I go further I just want to say how much of a fan I am of your products and also of BT who I consider God level in production terms (MISL blew me away when it was released and I had it on repeat for years afterward). This collaboration is essentially a match made in heaven and I hope it's the first of many. It's great news to hear the reverse function is coming, this will truly open up the plugin. Thanks for your comments on latency and I just want to clarify once again what I was trying to emphasise in the video. I did mention that I completely understood why it's there and it absolutely wasn't the fault of you guys, rather the DAW itself. It was particularly bad in Ableton but quite workable in Cubase, the latter being my primary DAW. I appreciate it must be quite frustrating and limiting having to deal with these types of issues when conceptualising a plugin. Note to self: stay away from Maschine. One other comment which I should have mentioned in the video was that you guys should certainly be applauded for designing a truly unique tool and not simply more Pultec or Moog emulations (as examples). I can't wait to see what you have for us next.

5:18 Wouldn't it already be possible if you just create a send for the snare to another track with snapback, and then soloing the snapback itself (using the headphones button) Are there no volume control for the dry/wet as well? Honestly I was interested with the plugin, but not being able to reverse or trim the samples does defeat the purpose of making it simpler... If they added these features then it would be a decent consideration. To me, this plugin seem to be more like, if you're already 8 hours into a project and then you wanna change/add to the drum sounds (which happens waaaaaay too often to me). It doesn't really make sense to do it at the start of the project, if you're already gonna be manually adding the snapback during sound design anyway

@adrenakrohm14 күн бұрын
Yep agreed. I'm still constantly finding out new tricks with it.
@msld_sound15 күн бұрын
FWIW, I would not consider this an adequate test of functionality since you didn't demo intended functionality. I would never use a long crash or clap sample (and yours were both playing forward) in Snapback's "snapback" section, because they are just not what you're supposed to use. And, if I were to use a forward-playing sample, I would put it in the "transient" section and use the offset amount to tune it to my liking. Try using the "snapback" section for a short snap / whip into your dry drum hit, the sample should peak at the end of the sample. I don't excuse Cableguys' lack of sample length controls, but that's why they aren't there; "snapback" is for backwards files "snapping" into the dry transient.
@adrenakrohm14 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment and feedback. I do start the video with a long crash simply to demonstrate how the latency manifests itself in the DAW, however I then move on to show, and I quote, an example of a more conventional sound, ie a short snare. The problem I had was that the samples I chose (genuinely at random, I promise it wasn't contrived for the video) had some silence toward the end which meant they were still playing too far in advance, hence why I was looking for a way to push them back in time (4ms is nowhere near long enough and this is there to add a bit of groove, not as a sample offset dial). You mention I was using forward-playing samples and they should instead be reversed. To be honest with you, I thought exactly the same until I started watching videos (including those from Cableguys themselves and Dan Worrall) and then playing around with the included samples. A snapback is a forward playing sample and only a fraction of the included sounds are reversed. However, either way this simply highlights the need for a reverse option on the snapback layer. Check the Cableguys video at 1:36 (should be timestamped). The bright green clip example is very clearly forward playing as are the following cyan/green, purple, orange examples. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmK7mYqbg9mUY9ksi=atwgSQRdBvKQcPm7&t=96
@msld_sound14 күн бұрын
@@adrenakrohm That's fair, but then as you said, you'll need shorter samples. And again, even if you used a longer sample or something with a long silence, you could load it into the "transient" section and then use the "Shift" parameter to offset it by enough time to have the same effect without any fussing. So again … try it like that.
@DanWorrall15 күн бұрын
Nice video. I agree it could use more editing options. I get the feeling those might be added in future. There is a question of where do you stop though: velocity levels? Round robins? Modulation or randomisation? It's all good, but could get confusing and overwhelming if not done carefully. I don't get criticising the latency though: it would be literally impossible to do this without latency! I don't see that as a flaw (maybe just a reason to switch DAW!)
@adrenakrohm15 күн бұрын
I'm honoured to have you here, thanks Dan. I should clarify in case I sounded like I was criticising the latency. I absolutely understand why this is and it's a DAW issue rather than Cableguys. Therefore not a criticism per se, more a comment that it would be quite frustrating to work around. As I said, I think the solution would be to render to audio early on or even to freeze the channel.
@DanWorrall15 күн бұрын
@adrenakrohm I just didn't load the plugin until I'd played in the midi parts. After that the latency just isn't a problem at all in Reaper.

@FeathersX12 күн бұрын
It's an interesting debate seeing that the Cableguys KZbin channel is using Ableton itself to showcase demos of the plugin. Ableton is rather poor at handling latency compensation but I am in version 10. Don't know if they made it any better in Live 12.

It's not really a thing for a Psytrance. It's more for house & slower styles. & could be great for DubStep. I like Psydub & such so I picked this up because why not. So far I do not have Latency issues In Logic. I have heard that Abelton is really bad with latency.. I do hope that they give more options in the little editor window too.. the factory stuff is ok as it is but yeah thats not why toy buy something. & I do have MANY reversed files as I have been collecting for years. so I have not had to much of an issue with this. but what you are saying here is absolutely Valid! Considering it's made By CableGuys you would have thought they would have had a few more bells & whistles!! for that its VER underwhelming. I think this is why you haven't seen that many people jump on this, there are almost no vids talking about it.

@@adrenakrohm I think the real value in this is by spending some time making files for it! so one day when you have the urge to make up a load of samples then thats when you you speed up the workflow later on down the line. not so much of doing everything in one the current session.
@Maradnus15 күн бұрын
@@fallenleaf24 yeah its one of them that require you to make some sounds for it. but after that you are up for a faster workflow. I ave had fun with some different snares, hats & kicks making some revs for them. Its a mission but on then days where I'm not feeling like diving in deep its been fun! I have about 9 samples that I really like now! & a bunch that are ok.
@diemturner575515 күн бұрын
I don't get it...what does the plugin even do? Setting the whole latency issue aside for the moment, what's the purpose or use case for it? I can't help but feel that if what a plugin does isn't discernable in 30-60 seconds (ideally it should be obvious in less than one second what it does but I realize that not everything will fall into the ideal envelope so I'm willing to give it some time), my interest is going nil at that point.
@adrenakrohm15 күн бұрын
I have seen other channels use it to add a snapback layer and it does sound quite good. Not for my music but for EDM and such it adds a little interesting element to the snare. However to do it using the plugin you either need to use the included samples or create and edit your own outside of the plugin.
