I meant to mention that the people I questioned had no idea why this section of Ghar-Il-Dud is still called Chalet. Having looked at the comments, I see that the producer of this video was born in Gzira. I lived in Gzira Road (now Triq-il-Gzira). The flats I lived in were owned by a man called Charlie Brincat and bore his name over the front door. When I visited in 2015 the flats still bear his name. I shed a little tear as I felt that I had "come home". Thare was some kind of construction going on across the road. When I returned again in 2018, a huge tower block had arisen. The area on which it stands was a cement works when I lived there. Nothing stays the same does it?

I lived in Malta during the years of 1962 to 1965. I remember that all that remained of the Chalet at that time was the front which was covered in barbed wire and warning signs. The building still had 2 levels, but all the internal structures were gone. My father took some 8mm film at the time but sadly it had degraded too much to be saved by me in the 1980's. I did not return to Malta until 2015 and found that the Hertz car rental was opposite the site of the Chalet. However, I questioned several older persons in the area and none of them seemed to know what I was talking about. I even showed one gentleman the foundation plinth which still exists, but he did not know that it was there.

Thank you for this informative material on the Chalet in Sliema. I like the old Sliema, the modern is not to my liking. The music was just gorgeous! I would not have wanted to live in the years of the world wars but I lied the spaciousness of the street the sights the Chalet and the sea. I liked the low built houses and the relaxed atmosphere the pictures suggested. It probably was not so, for many things but it looked wonderful and peaceful. I live in Bormla as a foreigner and I wish Malta were as it was in the beginning of the 20th century! I hate the tall houses and the narrowed streets the feeling of rush and traffic noise and hecticness. I find Malta tumultuous loud and crowded now. I would have loved living here when life was and Malta more humane and authentic. It is still beautiful but a lot of its charm is getting lost because it is allowed to build build build regardless.

You're welcome. I agree 100% with what you're saying. I remember Malta in the 50s and 60s, life was definitely less hectic and traffic was manageable. We had less money in our pockets but we were happy and content with what we had. Greed for money has blinded property and land owners to demolish the beautiful 2-storey houses and replace them with ugly concrete high-rise apartment blocks.

@@VellaEdgar How sad! Money is not everything. It was better when people were happier with less and money did not come in to bring about those horrid tall buildings.

I wish I had been able to visit Malta in the sixties, my first visit was 1988. I have returned many times. We were going to buy an apartment in Mellieha until tragedy hit my family. The Island has changed so much over the years, sadly not all for the better. is Vella a well known name on Malta? we know some people with the same Surname, they are originally from Malta.

Thanks for this. It brought back quite some beautiful childhood memories. Just an update for 1940-60s: The Chalet was initially run by Gianni Fiteni [my Grand mother's brother]. After Ziju Giann's passing away, 'title' was then transferred onto my mother Giovanna Schembri nee Borg Bonaci. Karmenu Borg Bonaci from Valletta who, competing with his brother Elia [also from Mandragg-Valletta] had his Hamrun shop was the caterer and not the partner. In fact there was álso an agreement also with Farsons. These are just memory-snippets. I also remember my father Carmelo playing with Vinny.

Edward Middleton Barry built our splendid opera house that was, in Valletta. He also built the Royal theatre in Covent Garden, amongst many other illustrious buildings. Brilliant architect .Now we have a monstrosity in its place! Shame on whoever was responsible.

Thank you :Malta was very much in need of tourism and millions to be rebuild, the old Gozo boats which use to come in grand harbour taking their merchant to Gozo all by hand and hard labour everywhere you look ; it was hard living. This is why people had to migrate ,even after world War 2 Malta was left in ruins.

I love your videos even though most of the footage is before my time but I love history. Since I left Malta as a teenager, I've only been back twice and from what I see now, Malta has become a playground for the rich. Still a nice place but too expensive for me to return and no way will I wear a mask especially outside. I would love to escape the cold and snow of Canada, starting to really get to me.

God help us if they rebuild it now going by the ugly junk they have already inflicted on the area. Such beauty replaced by such horror such as the Victoria gate and that awful building just inside, I believe it's parliament. I've only seen pictures since I haven't been to Malta fo almost 20 years. There are no artists left, I guess.

Images of a Malta I was there as a British dependant in 1963-1966. Wonderful place I was so happy there as a child. Went back there as an adult with my wife in the 1990s pretty run down, but people and places I knew were still charming.
