that is interesting, my mechanic installed the new distributor but didnt do any of the timing stuff you did at the end. its been well over 6 months now and no issues so i guess i got lucky ?

If he inserted the new one in exactly same alignment/position as old no need to time. The timing with gun at end is more fine tuning and verification.

You are the man! Been doing a 3 week brake job on my 2011 Mini Cooper S that was purchased on Oahu Hawaii. It’s since traveled with me home to Colorado. But after sourcing parts for months literally - I found the dreaded swollen rubber on the last piece of entire assembly. Turned spanners until 6am cause wife not happy to park in driveway in winter time as mini been on Jack stands for….. Gulp. Three. Weeks! She mad. So your little video tip just might save the marriage. I am a perfectionist and normally do a brake job after work but done before dinner. This one however between broken plastic brake sensor mounts, female aBS harness side connectors that crumbled to bits just unplugging them. Was frustrating. I bought car brand new with 7 miles. So kinda sad at deteriorating pieces. But all will be right as rain soon enough. And likely far better as I’ve discovered some turbo upgrades to improve the thrust.

What symptoms does a bad distributor exhibit? I’m experiencing a low speed bog and loss of acceleration.
@VTCMart2 жыл бұрын
That could be a symptom as the distributor can cause the timing advance to be inconsistent. Mine was misfiring and finally after it got too hot the car would shut off and not start again until it cooled back down. Take your cap off and check the rotor and underneath cap first, they could be worn as well. Metal shavings and dust is a sign of bad distributor (bearing on shaft are grinding up)

Can you do this without timing light

Yes, you can adjust and listen to the motor running by ear but less precise. Timing lights usually available to borrow from local auto parts store no cost.

I would check the gearshift cover is not blocking the lever engagement and also make sure you have a fully charged battery. It slows down considerably once the battery is close to discharged.

HELP 😔 I feel like mine goes about 2.5 super slow. Compared to how fast shes goin in thr video. Mine seems to have a hard time pushing itself :(
@VTCMart3 жыл бұрын
Hi Yasmin, there is a screw near the lever you have to remove so the higher speed will engage. There are 2 forward speeds, one reverse. Also it slows down quite a bit once the battery is almost depleted so make sure it is fully charged for 14+ hours (usually just let it charge overnight).

@VTCMart3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like internal bearing may be going out. Sometimes you can disassemble and replace the bearing or you can replace entire distributor. Don't let it go too long because the more play as it rotates, the more driveability issues it causes.

Hey Bill, make sure you are referencing the correct mark (see 1:25 in my video) as there are 2 marks. Also when you insert the shaft, sometimes it rotates/moves as you are inserting. If the rotor is pointing at number 2 you will have timing issues.

I don’t understand.. (I AM NOT A MECHANIC) so those 2 dots you pointed out are basically the position of the rotor? when installing the new distributor aren’t you supposed to mark where the old rotor was facing and a-line the new rotor in the exact same position? Ive watched a few other videos and they all basically said the same thing.. take the cap off both old and new.. take note of the rotor position and when replacing the new distributor make sure it is a-lined perfectly in the original position.. idk I hope you read this in time before I go and try to replace my own distributor!! Because I’m actually kinda nervous to do this job.. I don’t wanna ruin the engine!! If you have any tips or suggestions for me I would appreciate it thanks
@VTCMart4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristian, I would recommend turning the motor over so it is at TDC before removing the old distributor. You could just mark/remove/replace but the distributor tends to twist and rotate when going in/out and it may be tough to remember exactly where it was facing but TDC can always be set without the distributor being in place.
@zaccollins11974 жыл бұрын

@VTCMart6 жыл бұрын
Justin Berry Mine is 2004. '06 they went to a steering rack vs. gear box-idler arm setup so you might not have one. Have you checked your ball joints, tie rod ends and control arm bushings? When worn they can all cause what you're describing

Oh! I didn't know about the change from gear box to steering rack, but I did notice the steering rack when I replaced the struts a few weeks ago.
