As a youth my interests were art. I grew up and became a scientist. But in time I put that away and went back to art. One has always fed the other, but intrudes on satisfying regular people whose ideas are always in a box. Today I do n t chose one from the other but engage in both art and science. Now all is natural, normal and in balance.

Wow… I’ve just watched her being interviewed as a 90 year old, then as an 80 year old, and now this interview! - She’s so sprightly here! And I love the way her face moved. She’s so alive! I’d love to sit with her and talk.

Have always been amazed by Sam Gilliam's voluminous work. It remains to an honour to have visited Sam's studio in DC from the Corcoran.

It was frustrating for me to hear them ask more about the people she was around than her work and what it meant to her. But this was ten years ago and I’m glad she had a time to show and speak on her work before she passed. As a mother and painter she is an inspiration.

I went to art school very interested in abstract expressionism, surrealism and other modern movements in the early 1990’s. What was disappointing was most of the art teachers had very negative opinions in regards to psychological and spiritual ideas. It is wonderful hearing Anslow Ford speaking directly to what his intentions are in this regard.

The male interviewer ends with the condescending phrase “what a dear you’ve been”. She is a brilliant artist with an enormous personality and he needs to make her “small”, the sexist little man! He also blabs on and on when he “asks questions”.

I knew Suzanne in LA in the early 70’s when she had her own gallery off Wilshire near the Tar Pits…I think… Loved her gallery events bringing lots of artists together in particular Black artists in Los Angeles. LA Museum of Fine Arts had a magnificent Retrospective of Black Artists in the early 70s. Betye Saar was another Black Artist I met inmthis cluster of brillant Black artists working in L.A. I have Suzanne’s Art book titled, Animal. It’s a signed copy. A bit confused because the Cover of book is Mixed Media 1978 Artists collection. So I am possibly forgetting another meet up w Suzanne after I left Los Angeles.

Met Betye in LA through a mutual friend actress, Marguerite Ray. I lived in Laurel Canyon in the 70s and at that point Black artists were plentiful. Artist Suzanne Jackson created a artists salon at her art Gallery over off Fairfax and Wilshire. Artists would meet and talk art. Betyre was doing her “derogatory art” when I met her. An extraordinary artist and person👏🏾

That is not art. That is child-like level art, just as worthless as anything Warhol or Basquiat did.

I began with watercolors as well. Then I went to acrylics and later oils. What I experienced in watercolor continued to be the lesson that controlled the acrylics and oils.
