You know, I did not understand the appeal of this song when it was out. It just didn’t have any of the hallmarks of the stuff I was listening to at the time: No big, bombastic drum machines (as were popular at the time); no clear, repetitive basslines, etc. But as I got older, I grew to appreciate it a lot more: the understated approach to the programming & production, the vocals, that very subtle but soulful rhythm guitar… It’s all so sweet! Now I love it! Young me didn’t get it. Old me DOES!

Okay Set it off may be the one rap song that is truly the one. 1984, 10 years old white kid. At a youth center learning about culture and break dancing. Made my mom get me Shell Toe Adidas, and went and bought fat laces. All the kids taught me moves. I am 49 now and this is the one that will always bring me back. No matter what. Only others were Jam on it, White line Highway, and planet rock. I will forever be grateful for the mark these songs have made on my soul.
