They returned May 15th.. How long did it take them to sail back?
@TheValorVault2 сағат бұрын
About 5 days. Once they got about 20 miles or so from the entrance to Hilo Harbor they were able to use the little bit a power that had been generated by the screws dragging through the water while they were under sail.

Why send a submarine to look for a tugboat?
@TheValorVault14 сағат бұрын
Probably partly because of availability. Remember in 1921 Pearl Harbor wasn't the Naval Base it was 20 years later and the Pacific Fleet was stationed in San Pedro, California. Several of her sisters were also involved in the same search.
@Nerval-kg9sm13 сағат бұрын
Subs of that era stayed on the surface, unless they were on an attack run or evading. It was part of the harbor defense force, so naturally it would be used in coastal search and rescue.

Was this not really a win by the code breakers who told the navy where this fleet was going and when. Its alot easier to sink a fleet when the enemy thinks their comms are secret and your enemy can sit back an wait to mug you

I thought the enterprise was the only carrier at one point?
@TheValorVaultКүн бұрын
She was, after Hornet was sunk. Enterprise was damaged during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, then Saratoga was torpedoed and sent stateside, then Wasp was sunk. Enterprise returned just in time for the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. She was damaged, but because Hornet had been sunk, they made temp repairs so she could hang around til Sara was back. Crazy times for the USN.
@WyomingchiefКүн бұрын
@@TheValorVault100 correct. And if I'm not mistaken at one point we didn't even have an American Carrier available, we were using one of the british. But yeah there's several good books out there about the hornet, and the other two Enterprise in yorktown.
@joebombero1Сағат бұрын
Enterprise and Yorktown were being repaired after Wasp was sunk. For a few weeks, September 1942, the Hornet was the only one in service. Why the Japanese didn't swarm Guadalcanal at that time is a big discussion topic. Another "what if..."

Question please ⁉️ didn't two of the American boarding party sink with the sub
@TheValorVault2 күн бұрын
Not at all...Lieutenant Ross Bullard and Boatswain’s Mate First Class C. S. Hall jumped aboard the U-boat and opened the hatch but saw bodies floating in the flooded compartment below. The main deck of the sub was already awash. They quickly cut the line and disembarked back into their boat and began picking up survivors. Spencer only had 1 crew member killed as a result of this engagement, Radioman Third Class Julius Petrella. He and 25 others sustained wounds from the friendly fire during the melee after U 175 surfaced.

@michaeldoonan1429 Yes, not long before D-Day. They had to destroy it because if the Germans found out the US had one they would have changed the codes. The only one that matter was the one captured in 1940/41 by the RN/RCN
