My hat is off to the poor Chinese seamstress, making $3.50 an hour, turning out swimsuit after swimsuit that looks to be sewn near perfectly, they are not valued as they should be, I thought how difficult could sewing be, I soon found out how difficult it was, thanks for all the great content Katie, here's to a great 2025, this is now 3 years old and still helping so many people, I am one.

Hi! I’m looking to make a pair of bottoms for surfing… which would u say are your most secure bottoms? Also, do you have any non-reversible? I feel like that could make it extra secure… also! I love that ur rebranding and doing what is best for you. Slay!!!!!
@EdgewaterAve6 күн бұрын
I made the Charlie Bottoms pattern by request of many surfers! I'd say those are the best or the Emmy Bottoms. I'm also going to start work on a surf onesie here soon. Anything that comes down low on the hips is what I tend to see surfers prefer. And YES nonreversible construction is going to be significantly more secure. Foldover seams have more grip and it helps that you stretch the elastic slightly when sewing. This is my video on nonreversibles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWW5hY2mbqdsmbMsi=Q4HYe8j4jGD5M5T0

So for me personally I want to learn how to digitize my own patterns. I know how to make them, but I don’t know how to digitize them. So if you ever wanted to drop a course or even a video on how to digitize your own patterns that would be great.
@EdgewaterAve6 күн бұрын
I've decided to work on a resource list that's not exactly a course, but it has tons of info on patternmaking tutorials and directs you to where to find this type of thing. So keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, Pattern Lab London on KZbin is enormously helpful for digitizing patterns

I remember stumbling onto one of your tutorials almost 4 years ago and that’s what inspired me to start sewing! Probably shouldn’t have started with swimwear😂 but I wouldn’t change a thing!
@EdgewaterAve20 күн бұрын
Very risky to start with swimwear omg. But hey, after tackling swim everything else seems easy afterwards at least!!
@SaminaEngel24 күн бұрын
You are the best! I taught myself how to sew swimwear 10 years ago thanks to your videos and your patterns helped give me the confidence to draft more complicated styles! I was so happy to see that you had answered my question first haha. We would love to see basic patterns from you. Take your skills and give us the best basic tank tops, flare pants, and so on! It's so nice to be able to sew something basic in a few hours knowing that it'll fit perfectly!
@EdgewaterAve20 күн бұрын
Super helpful feedback THANK YOU! I need some flare pants in my life ASAP so I might need to get on that, like, tomorrow

Been loving all these videos!! I will say I personally am interested in pattern making courses/videos. I agree with you that there's so many pattern making courses on the market these days and I am also hesitant to commit as the language around it feels gimmicky ("learn pattern making and earn six figures asap" etc). It makes me second guess the course when that's the way to promote it vs just wanting to teach those interested in pattern making and can't commit to fashion school/don't know where to learn the resources. I'm biased as I've pattern tested for you plenty so I have faith in your work haha but I totally believe you could do that if you wanted to break into that industry! I also had a question but instagram was being glitchy and I couldn't use the question box lol: I've always been curious as to where the name Edgewater Avenue comes from!
@EdgewaterAve24 күн бұрын
You’re spot on with the courses using that language, if the product is that good then it totally sells itself. But I also get why they do it- they probably make tons of money selling that dream! Edgewater Avenue is the name of the street my grandma’s beach house is on ❤️ grew up spending summers there, so the name was sentimental plus it sounded right for a swimwear business!

How did you learn patternmaking and sewing??
@EdgewaterAve25 күн бұрын
Ooohh see that would’ve been good to answer! It was a combo of guessing/having no idea what I was doing and some KZbin learning too. In the more recent years I’ve invested in fashion school textbooks to learn more

This is awesome! I'd love to see exactly HOW you record yourself sewing. As a small sewing business myself, I always LOVE seeing how other sewing content creators create CONTENT too! Lighting, tripod set up, your process of planning your shoot. I was surprised at how long it takes to shoot sewing content, as opposed to the sewing prep and sewing the piece itself! Love your patterns, loved this vlog style too!! Excited to keep seeing behind the scenes videos! :)

Do you think the brother 1034dx is good enough to sell the swim wear? Can I get away with a sewing machine plus serger and no cover stitch in terms of quality?
@EdgewaterAveАй бұрын
Oh yes it’s fine as far as stitch quality! And I don’t ever use my coverstitch, just serger and sewing machine. But it just depends on if you plan to make reversible/concealed seams or non reversible. If you plan to do nonreversible it would be worth investing in a cover stitch machine
@CandyStreamsАй бұрын
Thank you for the in-depth guide! I’m planning on sewing swim. I will be buying the Brother 1034DX and a Brother Sewing & Embroidery Combo to add additional designs on the bikini tops. Is there anything I need to make sure the sewing machine has specifically for swimwear?
@EdgewaterAveАй бұрын
I haven’t done embroidery for swimwear so I’m not quite sure the things you’d need to look out for on that end. But most machines *should* be able to handle swimwear, the big difference is features that help more than others. For example my Pfaff has a built in walking foot which is super helpful for swim!
@CandyStreamsАй бұрын
@ I see, is there any machine you’d recommend to go with a Brother 1034D? I’m doing research for swim and many pros use $1K and up which I don’t have the budget for on each machine but more of $1K in total. Maybe you know a couple machines that add up to $1K that work well for swim.
@EdgewaterAveАй бұрын
@@CandyStreams I've been quite happy with my Janome 2212, and I bought a walking foot for it to help with swimwear! Also if it's available in your area, try to find used machines. Then you can get a fancier machine for a lot less money!
