As Jon Meacham shows in his biography of Jefferson, he tried many times to pass laws to either end slavery or limit its spread, and they were never passed. There are letters he wrote lamenting on the matter. In the end, he gave up trying to fix it and believed it would be for future generations. Had he chosen to pursue and defend the end of slavery with as much passion as he did defend the rights of states vs a powerful central government and revolutionary French ideals, he would have achieved some things, as his voice and talent were clearly not fruitless. Even if he had failed, his voice would have been heard for future generations. And even if he had not tried, he could have applied it to his own personal life. That is a shame and condemnable. That been said, it's not fair to say he was a complete hypocrite and did nothing to end slavery. Human beings are complex and Jefferson is one fine example.

I had an OBE during a botched tonsillectomy when I was about 8 years old. I "watched" the surgery from above myself and saw multicolored "curtains" of beautiful light all around me. That was in about 1948. I had no idea what OBE's or NDE's were then. Many years later, when I was scuba diving off the coast of Hawaii, I got lost at sea. Getting lost in an "empty" sea should have been the most terrifying moment in anyone's life. I was a surgeon. I had no "illusions" about being found. It is almost impossible. I "heard" a voice in my head to use my scuba mask as a mirror, if it is wet. This was my first dive. I had no idea of any such thing. I was NOT terrified. I had no fear. For years I wondered why I had no fear. "No reasonable person gets lost at sea without fear." I lost my fear of death during my tonsillectomy. I've had cancer too. Still no fear. Anyway, I was rescued (exhausted) after about 3.5 hours. It is reasonable to suggest that an angel or God saved me, probably because I had "more to do."
