Instead of landing exactly in the middle of the Hudson, probably it would have been better to get as close as possible to one of the sides of the river just to give them even the chance to be able to swim to the shore or closest deck as available or possible. Just a recommendation to always try to use logic and do what is physically possible to save lives.
@thierrynawar147
@thierrynawar147 6 күн бұрын
I think the pilots are best qualified to make that call. We really know nothing as to what it would have meant to land as you've described. Perhaps the aircraft would have tilted to one side and break apart.
@salsatimeband3075

@@thierrynawar147 Hello Thierrynaway, did you notice the question Sully asked the first official? Sully asked: do you have any ideas? You can watch from 8:45 to 9:30, even Sully said in the video: "any other action that could help us succeed even by a fraction in saving lives" and well, actually I know that as pilots, since I am almost a private pilot, we train for Emergency Landings when an Engine Failure and we are supposed to follow a checklist of actions that will help us land safely as possible but nevertheless it is always ok to look for alternate actions that will help us save lives at all circumstances. And my idea meant that prior to water landing, if he could have landed the airplane closer to one of the sides as for giving the people the chance to swim shortly to the shore or deck even to save them 1 minute or even "by a fraction" of swimming in the cold water then that'd be great! See what I mean? I am not criticizing Mr. Sully's actions, on the contrary, I am providing one more idea that any other pilot can use if needed in the corresponding eventuality.

They crossed in the middle to give them the highest probability of clearing the George Washington Bridge, where the suspension cables were the lowest. Once clear, they weren't going to do any maneuvering, which would have immediately increased the sink rate due to aileron deflection. Yes, I'm a pilot.

@@dpeasehead Hypothetical question. You are going to fly on a plane, knowing in advance it is going to have double engine failure at low altitude. You have no choice. But you can choose between a pilot/copilot with decades of experience or a pilot/copilot who were hired because they are female, people of color or gay. Which team do you pick to fly the plane?
@zachanikwano
@zachanikwano 3 күн бұрын
@@stevewalle1465 Why are you presuming that the pilots who are female or poc don't also have decades of experience? You act like those two categories are mutually exclusive when they're not. And, newsflash: No pilot is born with experience, they had to learn it somewhere (including white, male pilots). They are rigorously trained, and then released into the world to gain even more experience. And also, even pilots with all kinds of experience have caused fatal crashes, didn't handle a situation which led to fatal outcomes, or simply got very very unlucky (due to a chain of failures). Focus your anger at companies that don't adequately train/vet the people they hire (regardless of identity), not the people's skin color or private parts... at the end of the day it's the company's responsibility to make sure their employees are competent, and make sure the plane itself is in working order.

It’s an incredible case of bad luck to have a flock of large birds strike both engines to the point of catastrophic engine failure. But it’s also an incredible case of luck that the plane that it happened to was piloted by a captain with this much experience and skill, and that he in turn had an immensely experienced first officer by his side and that the flight crew were on top of the situation with such coordination. If any one of these human puzzle pieces wasn’t in place that day it may have ended very badly.

So incredible!! Every bit of training every flight was leading to that day!! Sully needed every bit of that experience to make it through.. He was blessed as well with a great crew… and ferry boat rescuers ready to save both the passengers and the crew!! Only a great leader like Sully gets that kind of teamwork from other people…. Teamwork was necessary to get out of this terrible situation.
