I'm old enough to remember when corporal punishment(the strap/cane) was abolished in schools and when parents were banned from hitting their children. Within months, children had the upper hand at home and in school... and children being children took full advantage of the situation. I remember a young lad of just 11 threatening his mother that he would call Childline and report her if she smacked him! Fortunately for him, he had been smacked, or punished, for his bad behaviour for long enough before the new laws came in, that he had learnt there were consequences to his actions. But younger children grew up with a sense of 'I can't be touched' and they, when old enough, had children of their own... who became even more entitled, and soon, those children had children of their own.... those are the children/young adults we have now.... no sense of consequences, a supreme sense of entitlement with little direction in life or any mental/emotional strength. Being punished, or praised, for your actions and learning consequences for your actions from a young age builds character, it builds emotional strength, it builds mental strength and allows a child to grow into a stable, decent adult. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in beating a child... anyone who does deserves the full punishment of the law. But a gentle smack, a raised angry voice or any other form of punishment teaches a child right from wrong and shows there are consequences. Similarly, praising or rewarding a child for doing right or something good teaches them that being good also has the consequences of reward. By not teaching children, from an early age, right from wrong, good, and bad, and the consequences of actions/words they will have no grounding or reference points to fall back on in later life... especially during teenage years when life is extra confusing! We are reaping what we sowed!
