Although Kevin Shields suggests that The Nightblooms guitarist, Harry Otten, 'copied' his style, it's actually quite possible that, in that 1984 period when My Bloody Valentine were living in Holland, Kevin saw Harry playing live somewhere: Harry's whammy-bar style was well established long before MBV adopted it.

It's funny to me how these things surprise all Americans when in the UK we had groups like PIL, Japan, The Creatures or Bauhaus playing on the most watched music program in the country and it was something common. This in the 70s and early 80s! Here you have PIL playing "death disco" on TOTP in 1979 kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHOTf5eDZq2shbc, this program was watched by millions of people, and these were all top 40 hits in the UK!
