I got diagnosed with it when I was young and have overcome it for a while now! I still do show signs of it but it has just turned into shyness now because I am comfortable speaking, just sometimes I am more shy than other people my age.

My daughter really does better having her pet rabbit. It actually helps everyone around her giving her something to talk about. If she feels comfortable talking about her bunny. Plus her rabbit is very outgoing and spunky which makes her laugh and take care of his behavior.

Yes I agree Anna. Our girls have two cats which assists them in lowering their anxiety when they have those moments. The cats also act as a distraction and allows them to share stories about our cats to their teachers.

How does one “fix” selective mutism?
@annabiavatislt24 күн бұрын
planning, understanding, being compassionate, having a system in place in order to change struggles into super powers.
@christesta25212 ай бұрын
Our school system is very good. My girls have a 504 and an IEP. One addition to my girls education is that I belong to tge Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and volunteer as many times as possible in the school. I found that this assists in lowering the girls anxiety since i usually work directly with all of tge classes including their classes.

Would a reward based system help someone with selective mutism or would it make it worse?
@user-wy7pm4md2e26 күн бұрын
I think that would be fine as long as its not seen as something thats forcing them to (coming from someone who has selective mutism)

I had a similar experience and my parents also thought I was choosing not to talk and make friends. I tried explaining to my mom once I just couldn't talk like I couldn't physically talk and my mind went blank and she didn't get it. Afterwards I just end up suffering through school with it. Thankfully as an adult it hardly happens as much.

I have multiple therapists at school that are currently working with my twin girls. There strategies are good, yet the girls are only making baby steps forward. Unfortunately I do not have the support of their mom and this makes everything more difficult. At this point medication at least on a temporary basis would help with their anxiety. Yet there mom won't hear of it. So the struggle to overcome S/M continues. Thanks Anna for this insightful information.

I'm more than happy to help! KZbin is my way of sharing information, but the first step is to download the free resources I have available at [Steps to Brave Talking](www.stepstobravetalking.com/free-tips-and-pdf). Addressing selective mutism involves a step-by-step approach. It's crucial to understand that while the common theme is fear, each child is unique. The first step is for adults and families to learn how to support their children effectively. I also offer a course exclusively for parents, open only a few times a year. It is currently open this week, so be sure to check it out at [Steps to Brave Talking](www.stepstobravetalking.com). For anything else, feel free to reach out at [email protected] Anna
