Sounds great-congratulations! Could you elaborate a bit on your mixing and sound mastering work?
@roberthasleder1526
@roberthasleder1526 28 күн бұрын
Thank you very much ! Yes, I will try to describe. My mixing is pretty simple: Not any EQ involved, no compression an any instrument with the exception of the electric fretless which I compress while recording through an Universal Audio 6176 Channel Strip. Main acoustic guitar, mandolin and dobro are recorded with two microphones (Schoeps CMC MK4) to a Pendulum MDP-1 preamp, high pass filter set at 80 Hz. Most of my mixing work is setting the levels and do the panning: Bass and main guitar in the middle (the two guitar mic tracks recorded in wide A/B configuration, panned hard left/right), mandolin panned to the left (10 o' clock), dobro to the right (2 o' clock). I fix the sound of dobro and mandolin (each recorded with two mics: body, neck) by leveling the two mics for the sound I like on that track. You'll hear 12-string guitar panned hard right, Irish bouzouki panned hard left, both at very low volume - this gives me a wide stereo image. Reverb is Lexicon vintage plate on main guitar, dobro and mandolin, additional Lexicon reverb (1,5 ms) on the main guitar. I use moderate compression and limiting in the stereo bus. So all in all it's pretty simple, no tricks or gimmicks. It's all about fine instruments, a good sounding room, fine mics and preamps, the right placement of mics for the sound you'll hear in your head - that's what I learnt in 30+ years of recording acoustic strings. Hope that helps a bit.

I tried the Mojotone NC Passive and loved the tone but found that the cable was "microphonic" itself. When I would touch it even slightly I could hear it in the amp, or even on the face of the guitar. Since I didn't want to risk screwing up shortening the long cable for permanent install, I bought the NC-2. It is my favorite in this demo by quite a bit. Nice work!

Hi, I had no problems installing it in the guitar you see in this vid, but it didn't fit into a 1956 O18. I installed a regular length Schatten HFN in a friend's Martin 00015 Streetmaster with no problems. So it really depends on the particular guitar and its space between the x-braces. I would measure that space and decide or go for the short version anyway. Best, Robert

Wow, great you like this one ! Thanks! I performed vocals, acoustic guitars, Weissenborn lap slide, mandolin, 5-string banjo, harmonica, upright bass and percussion. The lyrics are based on some personal experience: Those with responsibilities and possibilities prefer to choose their easy way out or even refuse to face the problem ("the shepherd's drunk asleep ...") while you notice a lot of talking and combat cries among your equals, mere lip-service but no serious willingness for real action which would apply some pressure on the above mentioned. Anxiety & opportunism rules and leaves one standing alone sometimes. Lesson learnt. Hope that makes sense. I borrowed the line "the mountain's full of sheep" from Bob Dylan's song "ring them bells".

Hi Robert. Wonder if you could help me. You have told me that you use DPA 4061 mic inside your guitar. But what preamp are you using with it? I have now installed a combo of Dazzo PU (Pin) and DPA 4061 (sleeve) into a TRS endpin. I am using a Grace Design Felix II preamp with the DPA going into Ch1 on the Felix, but the signals from the DPA are too weak. I can only hear it when turning gain way up and that is obviosly not optimal. Grateful for any input. Thanks. ERLiNG

Hi, did you activate the 12V dip switch on the left side of the Grace Felix ? Usually I set the gain at CH1 at 10 o'clock, the gain at Ch2 also around 10 o'clock (depending on the guitar) and get plenty of signal.

If a comparison video of two old guitars makes no sense, than my commentar about it makes no sense at all too 😅 On the other hand these little videos makes a lot of sense....for me at least it's a pure joy to watch and to get a glimpse of what such beautiful instruments can sound like. So thanks Mr. Hasleder🙏 And I'm always touched and delighted by your beautiful playing. You're from Germany or? I once thought....hmmmh does this man perhaps gives guitar lessons?! 🙂 But I think you're from Bavaria...and that's far away from Leipzig.. Are all these beautiful guitars that you showcase your own? In this example both guitars sound absolutely beautiful to my ears...dry, woody, punchy...a desirable vintage sound from my favorite wood combination spruce/mahagony. The LG-2 is perhaps a little warmer and more compressed compared to the 0-18 which has a wonderful clarity on top. I just wondered about that 0-18 that it seems to have a cut-through saddle and a considerably wider bridge string spacing than the standard 2 1/8" of thi era. 🤔 Thanks again and a nice Sunday for you Mr. Hasleder.

Hello and thanks a lot for listening and commenting - oh man, you made my day ! These particular guitars are part of my personal collection, but not each guitar that I present or compare is my own. Some I used to own, some belong to good friends, some are part of a trade ... Two pieces I play here are excerpts of my original compositions, and then there is J.J. Cale's "Drifter's Wife" in the fingerpicking part of this vid and David Grier's "Engagement Waltz" at the ending. Yes, I live in Bavaria, so it's a bit far to Leipzig for lessons. But sure I can send tabs if needed. Enjoy picking, greetings, Robert

@@roberthasleder1526 Glad I did! Thanks for your response. It has to be a nice collection for sure..hopefully every beauty gets some hugs now and then and regularly playing time 😅 The piece you play in the intro of this vid only on the LG2 is not another part of the engagement waltz or? Sounds absolutely beautiful. That would be generous if you could send me some tabs... 🙏 Then I can figure out if it's already possible for me to play this.. (Can I send an e-mail to you?) My experience… I just gave up on my mojotone NC-2 due to its higher noise floor. It sounds GREAT, but was too noisy for me especially after traversing the rest of my signal chain. My noise wasn’t like what’s heard here… but it is a single coil and can pickup fluorescent hum. Mine was more of a white noise floor that couldn’t be remedied without post processing.
