Do the Hopi people take part in the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow. If so what signified them as they enter the stadium?
@ChicagoDeepHouseHead
@ChicagoDeepHouseHead 4 жыл бұрын
All nations take part in the gathering. But it depends on what youre asking. Pow wows are exhibition and contest dancing in more categorial dances like fancy, traditional, grass and for women shawl, traditional and jingle. Its more of a plains thing. But there is folks from all tribes who participate for prizes in those categories. Now at times theyll exhibit other dances from other nations. Ive never seen them exhibit pueblo dances like these bc these are more sacred and specific to a reason for that pueblo like say for crops and fertility and food.

@@ChicagoDeepHouseHead How do the Hopi dress when they take part in the gathering, is there a special something that I can look out for to see the tribe.

Years ago, each had a different way of dressing. You could look at them and tell where they came from. Also everyone had that “look”. Just in street clothes, you could tell a Hopi from a Navajo, a Zuni from a Santo Domingo. Nowadays, these lines are blurred. When I was in school (decades ago🙄), the dorm ladies could tell which village you came from. They never missed. Another way: a Navajo and a Mexican. Give them the same shirt, jeans, boots and hat. They will wear it differently. And look on KZbin for Hopi dances way back. You could see how clothing styles were back then.

@@michaelpaisano9260 Thank you for taking the time to explain that. Do they wear anything specific when at a Pow Wow or do they just blend in with all the other tribes. I can recognise the Sioux in Pow Wows and as they wear the same when dancing on the reservation or other places, but I never see the Hopi in their dress when they dance at mesas.

@@theempath8244 I am a Tewa WARRIOR Hopi Paiute Navajo and grew up among the Hopi people. These dances are extremely sacred and can only be done for certain purpose such as snow, rain, a good long healthy life and prayers for the all of mankind and the universe. The Pow-wow doesn't belong to the HOPI people, it belongs to the Northern Tribes. However, there are some people, some families who chose to sing and dance in Pow-wow but, it is forbidden to dance and sing Pow-wow in the village sacred plazas due to respect for our religion and the other tribes. I hope this helps. MAY THE GREAT SPIRIT BE WITH YOU ALWAYS
