You have to balance ship features with port destinations. Smaller ships can get to more remote areas, but they usually lack activities. Larger ships have a lot to do (RCL Wonder OTS or NCL Encore) but are limited on ports due to their size. Bring cards, read books, enjoy each others company until the next port. We sail on 12/1 on the Jewel to the southern Caribbean. We know it lacks activities but we wanted the itinerary.

My wife and I traveled to Alaska via Norwegian in May. There were some ports that interested us more than others. We loved Icy Strait Point. We did explore a bit and took an excursion to see brown bears which was not a disappointment. The beach was fantastic. We were able to whales from shore easily and just standing there you can hear eagles everywhere. Very peaceful, beautiful and friendly.
@destinationdebrief27 күн бұрын
Since we didn’t take an excursion at this port or go over to Hoonah, our experience was less exciting. I’m glad to hear your time was better though. I do admit that I liked standing on the beach. It was a lovely view. We did enjoy the other ports we visited though. What were some others you and your wife visited? Any other excursions you’d recommend?

What about the Zipline, walk to Hoonah?
@destinationdebrief27 күн бұрын
We didn't walk to Hoonah as we honestly didn't know about it at the time, but leaving Icy Straight Point to go to another town isn't really something to do in Icy Straight Point. As for the zipline, that was a paid excursion if I recall that I believe requires you to go to Hoonah. So, I guess the moral of the story is anyone at Icy Straight Point should really just go to Hoonah lol.
@peterlitwin737727 күн бұрын
Or do your research before going to the port.

I've been to Icy Strait Point twice. Man, I hate to say it, but you missed the best thing to do there: a walk to Hoonah, Its a small town about a mile or two down the road. The walk is all along the coast and it's absolutely beautiful. Not much to do there but it's an actual, lived in small town and quite worth the walk. A bus is provided there if you don't want to walk back. It's a shame no one told you about it.
@destinationdebrief28 күн бұрын
I did hear someone mention Hoonah, but you're right that I didn't realize it was that close. Where were you with that information while we were there? haha, j/k. Looking now, I see it's a 1.5 mile walk. However, if there isn't much to do there as you say, it might still seem like a wasted stop to me. I agree that the beauty of Alaska is almost everywhere in that state, so the views of the walk to Hoonah might have made the stop a bit more worth the time. Stay tuned though as there are other stops we made on our cruise that we found much more enjoyable.
@davidbennetts61627 күн бұрын
Also walked to Hoonah and back again. Agree with you entirely, a beautiful walk along the coastline. Had a coffee there and visited the local supermarket. It's a real little town, with real locals. And much wildlife there, impressed by the bald eagles in their natural environment.

I often hear people say they want to take a cruise to Alaska. This video appalled me. I lived there for 10 years and my advice, if you want to see Alaska, is fly to Anchorage, rent a car, and drive somewhere like Homer, Seward, Portage to the south, or north to Denali. All those cruise stops are just tourist traps.
@destinationdebrief28 күн бұрын
I totally agree. Having taken the Alaskan cruise, I wouldn’t ever do it again. Alaska is beautiful, but you don’t really see it at these ports.

Cruises are very much a "pay to play" kind of experience. You aren't going to get much for the cost of your staterooms. I always view it as if I'm paying for the rooms and some guaranteed food (which may or may not be good), and then budget for everything else. "Free" stuff is always great, don't get me wrong, but that's definitely not the expectation. Oh, and all the endless upselling is definitely annoying! I think some cruise lines are worse about that than others.
@destinationdebriefАй бұрын
I think that is part of my issue with a lot of cruise lines. I look at value for money, but you don’t seem to get near as much value for your money on a cruise vs paying for food and a stay outright somewhere else. I also don’t view the things on the boat as free as much as should be included in the thousands spent to be there. If I still have to pay for everything to do on the boat, what did I really get for the thousands of dollars already spent?
