It's a pity that people think this is just CGI. In fact, the only CGI here is the graphic on the TV screen. Everything else in this scene was filmed for real.

What do you mean? They had a mission to accomplish, put their limits to the test, learn how to fight, etc. It had a good throwback to the previous characters and have Maverick come to terms with losing Goose and looking out for his son. It pretty much ticked all the boxes.
