lol tetsuo sounds like a middle aged man, I watched akira as a little kid for the first time and watched it many different times growing up and somehow everytime I saw it (from different sources) it was always the 2nd english dub that was made later on. I straight up didnt even realize that there was 2 english dubs and after having the seen the later one first I just cant sit through all the terrible east coast accents in the 80s dub lol

Yeah, unfortunately, anime dubbed in the 1980s and 1990s weren't taken that seriously. Before you had 4kids, Anime back in the day was sold in VHR/VHS and DVD stores at the far back. When fans asked some of the voice actors of 4kids why they censored anime, they answered, something to the effect of: "...if we didn't, then Pokémon would have ended up being sold at the far back of a video store".

Even the the OG dub has many unfortunate quirks, it's still my preferred dub. The new dub is completely lifeless and dull; all the characters sound bored and robotic.

Millions of older fans grew up on the 80s cut and to us it's the way it was made. What's funny is though we all thought that those dubs were done in California it sounds like these guys are from Boston. Which was part of the charm to all of us on the East Coast. To be quite honest I've never even seen the 2001 dub

Though I grew up with this dub and has charm to it, I honestly prefer the 2001 English dub with the exception of Tetsuo.

This dub is on par with Ghost Stories
