This ending is sort of reflective of the end of the manga series. Shingi had decided to stop the Third Impact. In the ending of the Manga, Shingi is on a train. As the Train passes what were some the Evangelions, Shingi, a mother and her son plus a few passengers notice the Evangelions. Shingi seems to remember, but he is distracted. After Shingi had left the train, he is seen talking to his Aunt on a phone. He is confirming his arrival in Tokyo. After the phone call, Shingi runs into Asuka. Both run into each Both say that they are taking the exams for a prestigious high school. Than as Asusa disappears, Shingi looks confuse as he looks around the area. Then Shingi goes to the direction which Asuka had headed for. The scene simply ends as Shingi starts to join the rest of the crowds.

I think the world was rewritten but not everyone from the old world has come to the new one mentally, only Shinji and Mari have got there first. And gradually all of them will be transferred to this world

Its a sand and a happy ending to the series the happy part is that we know shinji pain is over, but the sad part is that we prob wont see the others characters again

Mari is the only character in Eva with no damning character flaw, which, as far as being a character in Eva goes, is a Mary Sue. Be it a self insert of Anno's wife or whoever, it is not a realistic expectation for a perfect person to come and "save you." Anno's feelings at the time of making the original Eva and End of were very real, with very real outside forces in Anno's life causing him to feel that way. Of course he would feel more optimistic about life after the massive success of Eva and getting a wife, and the wildly unrealistic turnaround of the lives and outlooks (be it fake or not, talking about meta vibes here) of these characters is undermining the significance and validity of the feelings he had back then, and basically reducing the solution to a happy life down to "just go touch grass and get gf." Anno has great shame about the person he was when he made the original series, and the Rebuilds show that he misunderstands what made the original and End of so deeply touching, personable and relatable to people who were just like him. (If he was even trying to understand)

For perspective sinji erased evangalion from all accross the history so if there is no evangalion so there is no "curse of evangalion" So when sinji save them all and him at the beach, He feels that now all his responsibility are done and now he is alone(when animation is fading away) Marri come and pick him from his loneliness. After that both are is relationship and scene cut the train station I think that is the future him and marri Rei and kawru help him understand him self so they(Rei and kawru) are together, asuka always wants to be alone so she is sitting alone at the corner banch. I think when sinji send all, he him removed self from all their memory but marri remembers him.

I am all for number 3. When I saw the first series and then End of Eva years ago I was almost sure that it was all projection/dream/delusion of Shinji who lives in real world and is dealing with depression, remembers painful events from his past and his growing up and is afraid of adult life and realizes that he has to stop being a child and learn responsibilites and hardships of being an adult. He created a world after the apocalypse, big robots and angels to fight with and kind of countdown to the end of the world as a proxy for his inner feelings, loneliness, frustration, fear. Rebuild movies made me sure 100% that it was the case.

Although I like your three interpretations, I have another one. Shinji’s father, Gendo, tried to complete the instrumentality project but Shinji stopped him in the anti-universe. In the process he dies. Notice that his mother saving him is saving his soul only because when asuka is ejected from the Eva 13, she is in a pod, but shinji is glowing blue, spiritually floating watching his “mother kill his father”. In the process he says goodbye to asuka (poetical license) because her physical body was still there but that asuka is a clone, the real one died in Evangelion 2.0 when unit 01 chew her capsule with her inside. He says goodbye to kaworu’s spirit since he was already dead, and he went on to leave growing plants with Kaji in the afterlife. Kaworu does mention it’s a cycle but that does not invalidate it He says goodbye to Rei, but that is her spirit, since the real Rei died in Evangelion 3.0. He tells her to find happiness like her clone found, but that is an allusion to peace for her spirit. Then asuka capsule is seen in Kensuke cabin in the mountain which means that asuka clone made it out of the anti-verse, the same with Wille’s members, except for Misato, who died with her ship. Mari is dead, and the key point here is that she promised Shinji she would go after him and Shinji specifically said he would be waiting for her before he disappeared before boarding unit 01. Mari presumably died together with professor Kozo when Nerv exploded. When Shinji woke up at the blue beach that is an allusion to show that when he was about to lose hope as the animation starts to crumble, Mari shows up, fulfilling her promise of going back for him, even in the afterlife. At the station he sees Rei, Kaworu and Asuka but those are figments of his imagination. We see that Mari and him are older, which means that they are “living” together. The world is back to normal over there, the neon genesis, because that is not the real world. The real world is the post apocalyptic one where Asuka’s clone, Kensuke and Koji are living, together with Willi’s crew

Not going to lie, Mari groomed shinji. So at the end of the last evangelion we see that Mari new gendo and shinji's Mom, we also see that Mari first met shinji when he was a baby.

No, it is all wrong. It is very easy to understand. When he is on the beach, it is still in the anti universe. So she picked him up to leave there, then they returned to to the rewritten world.

Yeah, i would rather have an open ending instead of this. Like, it coukd have ended in the escene were Yui and Gendo sacrifice themselves and i would be fine with it. But this... i raises so much unnecessary questions and very questionable assumptions...

Honestly I hate the ending. I watched this anime when it was made 1995ish. It only gave us the ending to Shinjis story but didn't even give any mention of what happened to Rei or Asuka. As if they didn't deserve an ending at all. Wtf man

I think its pretty obvious that this is a "good" ending, as well as a definitive end to the series. In the show *and* End movie, its obvious that Shinji has unlocked the way to deconstruct the universe and then either restart it, rebuild it or destroy it into his own tailor made little "paradise". The TV shows is the most ambigous one, bcuz all we see is that Shinji gets recognition, and we cant tell if the entirity of universe, like in The End, or just a generalisation of what Shinji changed. And The End is quite self explanatory, that he used the time given to reconustruct the universe to simply create his own personalized hell, aka - the bad ending. But in the end of the 3+1 movie, its the good ending. Shinji says it himself - he will fix the world by removing just one thing - the evas. Of course, he also did some smaller adjustments, like giving Asuka a family, Rei a life, Kaworu a purpose and his dad confidence. Near the very end, theres the transition of anime to sketch to drawing, which i interpret as the adjustments shinji made as being realized, and when Marie comes out of water, thats a "wake up" into the new reality, which can be interpreted into 100s of ways, but imo its both a sign of Shinji's maturity and that the author has deffinetively concluded the series. Personal theory: Marie is an author's self-insert, a narrative tool to achieve the good ending.

Village 3 is still there, but only Mari and Shinji are alive, Raye and Kaworu are essentially Demi gods and angels so they show up in the last shot in that the angels that cared about Shinji are still there, but everyone who died in the last hour insane alt universe are like dead dead and well that’s as far as I have got. But yeah they are going back to the village but also the symbolism is for the fans who put too much weight on all of this, but yeah for the last part your’e last theory is good I don’t agree with your whole theory at the end and I think Shinji aged quite a bit in the third film in like a Peter Pan way, but no Shinji is not imagining everything. Everything at least for the first two films happened

going over it all. I believe NGE as a whole is an autobiography of Anno. Rei and Asuka represented crushes Anno had in his youth and he saw them go on to live happy lives without him while "Mari" stepped into is life, voiced by a top tier actress that embodies a waifu for everyone across the entire industry. Anno wanted Evangelion to grow and flourish beyond his own story, like gundam did. He wanted other writers and peoducers to chrime into the universe and tell stories of "kaiju" attacks around the world being defeated by evangelions. Anno created something too personal no one else wanted to touch. The films is Anno waking up from his dream and letting go. So i believe it was all a dream.

I thought it was gonna be a cool sci-fi mecha anime. But it turned out to be one of those corny ass psychological anime’s where the interpretation is left to the viewer and is left so open that the shit means nothing because you’ll never get a concrete answer

My interpretation is that shinji creates a second world without evas parallel to the one that most of the story plays in. He said hes not going to turn back time or something like that because it would make all the strugles and all of the hard work in vain that the people like in village 3 put into making the best out of still being alive and he saved asuka and rei and sent them there because they can both find a place there. He himself then created a world similar to ours where evas never existed and went there, where marie then found him like she promised to. In the Train Station scene we just see them living a normal life showing us how shinji reached happines by just being normal

I think that shinji saves those people and stays in world of illusions in antiverse with mari
