As a pels fan. Im simultaneously extremely excited and extremely terrified of this upcoming year. Karlo Matkovic summer league made me feel like we have two backup centers in Karlo and Theis, but neither is worthy of a start. And looking at the options, i dont see us making a trade this year unless its at the deadline and suddenly someone is willing to take the risk on BI. Kinda praying on the cavaliers downfall for that reason.

That's because there are currently only 4 guards - Maxey, Eric Gordon, Lowry and McCain (who has been a disappointment). Need to sign a bigger guard and Jeff Dowtin plays bigger, can shoot and is a very good ball handler. Dowtin has played the most minutes in Summer League, and in all 7 games - running the team. Signing Morris and Dowtin would bring roster to 14, and there are reasons Morey would keep a roster spot open. They took a massive risk and they kept their draft picks. That’s huge. As a result, their options are open either for a trade or for draft and development. When you consider that, it’s a great job and the only reason it worked is because of PG opting out. I still need to see them on the court but they should be in the mix. However, the team will still only be as good as Embiid’s health.
@YossiGozlanNBAАй бұрын
Keeping their picks is huge. Maybe they go for a bigger name than DFS later.
@DOGrooveАй бұрын
The problem with Ingram is that he has some Tobias Harris in his game. They both love to pass up wide open 3s to dribble into contested mid range 2s… and Embiid loves to dominate that mid range area. Paul George, on the other hand, is an elite catch and shoot 3 point shooter who fits better with Embiid and Maxey. Ingram would have been ok but the Sixers also would have had to give up 2-3 Firsts for him. Signing PG and not losing any assets was probably the best move.
@rayl3103Ай бұрын
If Ingram was a free agent, then maybe I would have felt different but you’d have to trade for a guy with a questionable heart. That’s a lot to ask for.
@YossiGozlanNBAАй бұрын
I realize Ingram is flawed. But he’s also much younger and cheaper than PG. PG might only give the Sixers one great year before dropping off, while Ingram could give 4-5 more steadier years even if the ceiling isn’t as high. It’s a contrarian opinion, but if I had to choose between PG and Ingram, I’d go Ingram even if it cost like 2 firsts.
@DOGrooveАй бұрын
@@YossiGozlanNBA Yea but Ingram wants a max, right? So he would only be cheaper this season and then you would likely have to give a Max deal to a guy who probably isn’t worth a Max. Also, despite being younger, Ingram has also missed a lot of games because of injuries.

@jerry25aАй бұрын
@@YossiGozlanNBA Achiuwa is really a PF, but can't shoot. I was hoping Paul Reed would have cleared waivers, and then re-sign him for a Vet Min, as a PF. Reed has shown he can shoot 40% from 3 pt, although fans and coach didn't like his form. That Reed was grabbed up by the first eligible team to sign him off waivers, confirms he was worth his 7.7 M contract. Reed will be one of 4 Bigs for DET, and is young, so I doubt he is moved. Sixers need shooting. They will probably sign Keve Aluna to the 3rd 2-Way contract. He's 6'9" and can rebound and shoot so he could play up to 50 games at the PF position and could even jump ahead of Bona as backup when Joel is out. As a result they will likely keep the roster at 14, to allow Keve to get an NBA contract at end of season (or if have to take back 2 players when trading KJ Martin. Knicks have Achiuwa's full Bird rights, but I don't see them offering more than 5 M to re-sign him. Surprised no other team offered more than a Vet Min for him. At first I Knicks were going to be hard-capped at 1st Apron, in which case they would not have been able to retain Achiuwa. FWIW, I am pretty confident Morey/Nurse want to re-sign Marcus Morris as a stretch PF, they don't currently have. As a Sixer fan myself, its understandable you weren't aware how good Morris was contributing for the 2 months before the trade deadline. However, the hold up should be that Morris would want a PO for year 2 and Morey doesn't want that 2nd year (besides it would count as an extra 2.1 M towards the cap if he had a 2nd year. Sixers currently only have 4 guards under contract and Nurse loves good ball handlers. They are obviously testing out Jeff Dowtin (who already earned a Vet Min contract) as their 5th guard. Dowtin really has no weakness, TBH and has been the floor leader during the 7 summer games. Dowtin is a true Combo guard and a great ball handler and shot creator. Morey is probably checking out other options before re-signing Dowtin to a multi-year contract. First year would only count as 2.162 M to cap since 3 NBA years of experience.

Correction: It is Keve Aluma. Also, signing Marcus Morris to just 1 yr, would save 1.2 M, not 2.1 M to the cap.

But that scenario had problems as it KJM would have to have been signed for like 30 M to take back 15 M as Yossi had explained due to Base Compensation. Then there would have been the issue that Nets would have had to agree, and they certainly would have wanted 2 first round picks. Besides fans are wrong about DFS. He's not as good as people think, and Morey surely knows that. DFS is a mediocre shooter and not a very good rebounder. He's only 6'7". @@YossiGozlanNBA I seriously doubt Morey would do a 4 for 1 trade in order to get below the tax. Those other 3 players would be valuable. He would have to replace 3 players with new Vet Mins, putting them back over the Lux Tax. However, it certainly may be possible to get under the 1st Apron if trade KJM for some one on a rookie scale making around 4 M. The more generous new CBA matching rules would allow this, as long as the other team was below the 1st Apron. Its will be interesting to see, but its possibly 70% of the NBA will be either over the 1st Apron (includes over 2nd Apron teams) or hard-capped at the 1st Apron, but the trade deadline.

Anxious to see how he fills out those last 2 vet min spots.Everyone wants Marcus Morris and it's a feel good story but at this point he is a open door on defense and he never really was a great rebounder. I'd like to see either Nwora or Lamar Stevens or Osman for one of those spots - younger energy guys who can score a bit, rebound a bit, and defend.

I ran this scenario. If they did that trade and sign two minimum players to get to 14 players, including Quinten Post at the rookie minimum, they'd be $4 million above the tax line. They could easily get below by trading Wiggins for a package where they decrease payroll by that much. I don't think they'd have to give up assets to move Wiggins in that type of deal, I think there will be teams willing to slightly increase payroll to acquire him if they don't have to give up any premium assets or young players.

Hi Yossi - question - let's say the Bridges trade is as reported with no additional players from NY, and they take on more salary, and hence are a 'first apron team'. Does this mean they are hardcapped at the first apron for all transactions this season($178m)? Or can they potentially use transactions available to 'first apron teams' to operate over the first apron amount (as long as they stay under the second apron)? So using the taxpayers MLE, vet minimum, second round exceptions, re-signing Precious and/or Burks? Or is it strictly a hard cap at the first apron?

Good quick analysis. I do think, as you've talked about on Twitter, that they are going to make additional moves to facilitate resigning OG while staying off the hard cap. Kind of the predictable moves such as dumping Randle, an expensive redundancy in an Mikal+OG front court. Thibs does appear to like Robinson more than Hartenstein as the starter when both are healthy. Robinson also have what is likely end up a much more favorable contract. The health concerns are very real, though: 90 Robinson games vs 157 Hartenstein games over the last two years. If you're trying to chase down the Celtics, health especially come playoff time and how Thibs works his players, is pretty important. So what they do at Center with those two is pretty interesting.
@YossiGozlanNBA2 ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. And it’s possible that the Knicks have a completely new center rotation next year. It seems like they could be looking to move Robinson regardless of if Hartenstein stays.

Thanks for the excellent breakdown. What nobody is talking about is the fact that Brunson was expected to sign a big extension this off season. I don't see how that's possible now with all the moves we made and if we resign all of our players. People are saying it's less likely we resign Ihart now, but I think the Knicks are still trying to get it done. If we can get his 1st year pricetag down to 35 million or less, that leaves 18 million for Hartenstein, and we'll have like 12 million left over to fill out the rest of the roster and pay our draft pics.
@YossiGozlanNBA2 ай бұрын

I read today that the Knicks considered including either Mitch or Deuce into the Bridges deal and that would allow our cap to be the 2nd apron which is $189 million.
