WOW. This is very nice. This would be a perfect setup for a traveling jewelry maker. I hope to be such in the future but I've started too late in life to make it a lifestyle plus I don't want to tow anything. I'll be near 80 when I can hit the road. Prior commitments. I'll need to keep it simple. Very nice indeed. Thanks for the tour. I'll check out your website.

Are you flipping pattern and putting on back side of glass?
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks2 ай бұрын
@@carlalakins always cut on the smooth side. So, if you want the texture to be on your viewing side, yes, flip the pattern (so face of it is against the smooth glass) and glue it. When you finish with cutting and grinding, the texture side will fit into your spot.

My foil keeps sticking to the tool after I cut it when I'm done with my piece and then it's a mess to unstick... What am I doing wrong?
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks10 ай бұрын
You should be holding it on the sides, never on the top where the foil is. I've always thought this was a design flaw, I think it should peel the adhesive away at the top right before it goes onto the glass, not at the beginning, just because of this. Maybe the people that copied it and are manufacturing them now will figure out a way to change the design.

These were very helpful tips. I did lots of stain glass for 11 years and stopped when I moved out of state. I’ve always loved stained and interested in starting a project again. After being away from working with glass for so long your videos and tips have been a great refresher course for me. Thank you so much.

With the frit are you on about the 10% rule by that I mean if you are using 104 COE glass and you want to use 96 COE frit then it is only 10% frit to the 90% 104 COE glass you are using so not to cause a compatibility issues between the two glasses, is that right? Cause that’s how I am to understand it. So all in all, that makes up the 100% in the complete piece with 10% 96COE / 90% 104COE. Also beautiful marble by the way it is an eye catching piece of glass artwork
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can mix 104 and 96 - sparingly. Otherwise I use all 96 glass

Should we put flux onto the INSIDE edges of the pieces, before assembling them, just to make sure, in case it doesn't flow down naturally?
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks Жыл бұрын
No, you want to flux as you solder as it's a corrosive.
@rodschmidt8952 Жыл бұрын
Should we create "spacers"? Tiny pieces of extra foil, here and there, just to keep the edges apart and keep that gap open?

Thanks for the excellent ideas on layout boards. I'm just starting, don't have a lot of money, and it seems everyone is pointing me to expensive morton layout system and homasote boards. They are expensive for just small sizes. These ideas are great easy DIY alternatives. I like the one corner permanent. Seems it'll be more stable to move and stack projects.
@DubDTube Жыл бұрын
nice tut on the came thx! Do you have preference or suggestions on overlapped frame or 45 cut corners?
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks Жыл бұрын
I use a notcher on 1/8" zinc which makes a perfect 45 degree miter. For larger zinc, I always run the vertical side zinc from top to bottom and insert between them the top/bottom zinc. This helps transfer the weight of the panel all the way from top to bottom as well as a place to "bury" in my hangers (if not using a wood frame or inserting directly into the window space). As far as overlap/flat butt together vs 45 cut.... it's all going to be soldered over, so you won't see either one. The only time I would miter a 45 degree seam (VERY rarely) is if the corners might be seen (usually hanging high enough that you can see the corners) but most people don't even think about it.... they're looking at the window. Hope this all makes sense.

Hi Sandy, My name is Sandy too! Although I have been doing Stained Glass of well over 32 yrs, I have never done a "leaded panel" & my granddaughter/hubby have asked me to do one for their LR. I did, one time yrs ago, attend a "lead class", but, the instructor told me I did not need him; just practice. So, my ? is: approx size of the panel is: 24"x 36"; what size H came should I use on the inside? Thanks for any help. I usually do "copper foil" specializing in "fan lamps and stepping stones"; only problem with the stepping stones, which I have esentially stopped making, is the deer! We live in the mountains; I made a 5 stone "Peacock" stepping stone set; they ruined it!
@SandyKJohnsonGlassworks Жыл бұрын
I would probably use 7/32 or 1/4" depending on design. Remember, there is no fudging with lead - glass has to be cut perfect. On Facebook, there is a guy named Jerry E England that has some great videos on lead work- its definitely worth the time to watch as he gives lots of tips! That is going to bea very large and heavy window, definitely have it framed in wood
