Rewatching this I think people give Vanesa more credit for being strategic than she actually deserves. Yes, she's extremely manipulative, but that's not game strategy, that's her life strategy. She's just a toxic person. You can tell it's not strategy towards the end when she shows Steve all her cards constantly. She doesn't recognize him as ever possibly being in her way, so she just gives up everything to him.
