In those days, most working-class people never completed their formal education. Many dropping out before they were 16 to start working to support their families. John-Boy's decision to do this was not radical at all but bore out of a sense of practicality. The same was true of both his father and grandfather as well. In those times, childhood was often cut short and kids had to segway into adulthood fast. Life was hard and you had to stand on your own two feet quickly.

Good god. To be so poor at providing, your son has to provide. Parenting fail.

This episode was an intentional Hollywood misrepresentation (bordering on parody/caricature) of the early Biblical young-earth creationist movement; and as such was unworthy of _The Waltons_ as a family-oriented, faith-friendly TV series. 😔

Grandma is like the Edna Birch character in Emmerdale. If anybody thinks I am exaggerating I would like them to say so, but than does mean to say I'll take back what I said about Grandma Walton.

The preacher seemed to really want to gain his wife's approval. She wouldn't look at or smile at him unless he was using the bible to justify why everyone has to bend to their will...I mean, God's will.
