The smog was terrible back then. Anyone who lived after the Air Quality Management District was established in 1976 doesn't understand how good we have it now. As a child in the sixties outside L.A., we had "smog days" when the air was too bad to go outside to play.

I couldn’t agree more, I’m working on a series of 10 16 mm films that were shot between 1940 and 1955 of two young men that begin attending military academies and schools when they’re just about 10 years old, I think. Their family was pretty wealthy and the color Films while in very bad shape have beautiful color. I’m working on restoring those right now. I’m amazed at the difference between those fellows in the film and kids today. I can’t remember which despot said it, but it is true that this country will be conquered through our children. Thank you very much for watching.

Super. A friend of mine turned a reel mower into the back wheels and motor for his go cart. He removed the cutting blades and just bolted the reel mower to a wood frame, seat, and crude steering wheel made out of a record player turntable. It only went about 10 mph max, but it was fun, and we wore the tires off of it, and a Radio Flyer wagon hitched to it. The funny thing was, the wheels of a reel mower only engage in one direction, (The more you know) to make turning easier, and freewheel in the other direction, which made for a great way to have a differential on a solid axle, and get two wheel drive at the same time, but it means no reverse, and no engine brake. When we got on the steeper hills, both drive wheels would freewheel going forward, and you could easily go super dangerous fast downhill, and full time two wheel drive going forward would get you back up the hill, but learning to drive so you didn't need reverse was interesting, even though one kid could move it fairly easily. 💙 T.E.N.

Powered reel mowers were the best at making your lawn looking immaculate. That's why golf courses use them. I used a giant Jacobsen with 7 reels that had 10 blades in each. The fairway would be perfect. Of course keeping those blades and bedknives sharp required good equipment as well, but worth it.

In 1963, I was a teenage boy who went to POP at least once a month. It was cheap to enter and the girl watching was supreme. It's funny but I didn't remember the Submarine ride. But it was over 60 years ago. I loved the hall of mirrors that made you look dorky.

I grew up in the middle of the San Fernando Valley and lived there until I moved to another state in 1982. Back then, I loved California. It was beautiful, traffic was reasonable, people took care of their properties and had the water to do it without spending a fortune, the food was fabulous, and life was good. Then the hippy movement happened and everything went downhill from there, especially the politics, which is why California is a complete mess despite Reagan (when he was governor) having left the state a surplus of funds when he left office. The Democrat policies are disastrous everywhere they're voted in. DON'T VOTE DEMOCRAT unless you want more of the money-wasting, over-taxing, and more illegal aliens GIVEN everything for free, including the vote!

I was born there in 1959. The family filming this were probably about the same age as my parents (my mom's 94 now and I’m 65) Nice to see so many landmarks from my childhood. Dino's Restaurant featured big in my history. Gone now. And what was that "Southern Costal Route"? Obviously they read that name off a map from the day. We always called it Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH. Actually the graphics were very good for home movies from 1961. Thanks for sharing…😃

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology Was born at Cedars and lived in Hollywood for five decades. After the deinstitutionalization movement began in California in the 1960s, many state mental health hospitals closed, forcing many folks who needed a lot of care onto the streets. Without those facilities, many mentally ill people ended up in jails and prisons which are not set up to provide safe, compassionate care for brain illnesses. BUT in 1981, when President Ronald Reagan deinstitutionalized the mentally ill and emptied the psychiatric hospitals into so-called “community” clinics, the problem got worse.... much, MUCH, worse and here we are.
