This is miss leading because he said he’s vegetarian aspiring to be vegan. I ‘m looking to see now in October 2024 if he actually is. He’s got the science with the microbiome etc he understands the cruelty of the meat industry but spiritually, at this point he’s not quite there. I’m hoping he’s caught up with the cruelty of the dairy and egg industries too. I Will go on to continue my search now to see if he’s finally vegan as all spiritual leaders should be. Makes no sense at all to be part of, in any way, the exploitation and cruelty of animals who are also sentient beings.

I’d love to know when you were planning your editorials at the biting of your career, did you supply your own clothes or hire a stylist ? Also if you use a stylist, do you pick the clothing or let them, and did you plan the locations before or after knowing what the clothes would be ?

I was just retouching a 54 year old face without makeup today shot with the Sony A7riii. F3.2 and OMG, every single pore looked like the moon. Spent an hour retouching and another hour researching on lens filters. Sometimes I really miss the Pentax 67 and the 105-made Beautiful skin.

Would you reveal the commercial side of retouching? how and where do you find retouchers, what are the average numbers?

Such an interesting and sensitive topic! I think personality is much more than just looks. When we're in love with someone through the years we tend to notice more beautiful things in our partners than our partner does in themselves. When kids love their parents, they see their inner beauty that comes not only from looks but also from character. Same goes for our friends. When you aware enough, especially as a photographer, you tend to notice the beauty within a person, their divine light. Of course we don't have that opprortunity with a star from a cover or a billboard to know them better. That's when beautify and retouch comes in, I think. To idealize them and somehow to show their inner beauty on their faces. It's a delicate balance between genuinity and idealization.

Photoshop is not so "dangerous" as AI... though many AI pics already look better and more realistic than heavily edited in PS 😜

Alright I can vouch for this- as a huge fan of Alexi many moons ago, I had the opportunity to assist a job for him. Day went well, crew was great, and after we wrapped I decided to ask before I left if I could get a picture with Alexi as a personal momento. My request was the type of thing that normally in NYC would get you escorted out of the building. However, not only did Alexi take a photo with me, but he said "Let's take a bunch of pictures!" He got his first assistant to come over, take my camera and shoot a series of photos of us doing different expressions, poses, just having fun. We pretended to be models and the assistant pretended to sort of be a Austin Powers type of photographer. So I got a bunch of photos with one of my biggest influencers (before that was even a term), but he also went above and beyond in acquiescing my request. Still have the photos, still appreciate the gesture and I am still grateful for the opportunity to have gone so well.

Advice for newcomers: The reason pro photographers are so picky about assistants being so flawlessly professional is because they don't want to hire anyone who does the same shit the photographers did when they were new. Waka waka.

Such a good story - when my wife and I first moved to NYC as photo assistants, we walked from our apartment in Park Slope to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to take pictures of flowers. My wife Chelsea tasked me to pack up her camera before we left. Upon arrival to the garden, I realized I left her camera battery in the charger back at the apartment. I'd like to say I know your pain, but luckily for me, the economics of my story were slightly different. :) Hope you are well, nice to hear from you! Best, Ted

Can you become a renown or successful photographer through self education (I mean without attending a formal school of photography, art etc)? I suppose today with the potential of reaching people through social media it may be easier to attract audience. Thank u.

Would love to watch a video of you on set how you start the shoot. Would be helpful to know what you usually do as soon as you arrive on set, how long you generally spend chatting to client, team etc and how quickly you dive into the shoot. Please do a come join me on my shoot type of video to show us the reality of a shoot. Its helpful especially for those who dont have prior assisting experience and wants to dive into a full time photography role instead :) please also include the lighting setup and you testing out the lighting

Good advice. Alexi please advise on when should a young Photographer approach photography agencies to sign them? How should one approach an agent- How to articulate the introduction email? Please also share with us what rates to charge when starting off, day rate, half day rate. Also share what kind of rates to charge once more experienced just to give us a better perspective. Thank you :)
