$30? If it’s not $300+ titanium frame lock in M390 then I don’t wanna look at it! Anyways, budget knives are super sweet, especially for people who enjoy knives but don’t wanna break the bank. And there so many knives now below the $80 range that are awesome. Personally, as i’ve been collecting, it’s hard to gravitate towards cheaper knives because I guess I have spoiled myself. All great none the less.

That's micarta on the Remette Rhino rubbing some oil onto the micarta will improve the color and get rid of the white spots. That first version of the Rhino is an odd duck, it has a secondary detent that rides against the blade all the way though it's full range of motion, and it is a standard plunge/button lock. They were going for a button lock with an actual dedicated detent but, it ended up creating a quirky action. It won't gravity open due to the detent and it doesn't free drop because of the detent ball friction on the blade. After disassembling and tuning the detent and adding nano 85 oil to the detent path I'll say it now drops shut much more freely than before. I definitely hear ya on not all knives are for everyone.! I have both of the knives you showed and your complaints are valid. I kind of like the v1 Rhino simply because it tried something different, and I really like the looks of the Ahab but the super slick handle is the primary reason I don't carry it often. I'm deep enough into the collecting hobby that I seldom regret a budget friendly purchase.

Currently going through this right now with my first knife from Petrified Fish, the Tena. I wanted to try something a little out of my wheelhouse, as I usually go for sheepsfoot, droppoint, or spearpoint blades and figured I'd try a kwaiken/tanto on for size since the Tena seemed well-made. By all means, it's a decent knife-especially for the price I paid for it; bank-vault lockup, feels nearly as secure as a fixed blade to be honest, acceptable blade geometry, etc. But this knife just isn't for me. I find the handle too neutral, and I fully realize now I prefer any other lock type to a liner lock at this point in my collecting career. The front-flipper is nice and can even be used as a wave deployment in a pinch, but I wish it was button-lock instead, don't care for the neutral handle, the pocket-clip, the overall blade shape, or the size. I thought I'd like it, but it just definitely isn't for me. But hey, a lesson learned, and a none-too-expensive one thankfully. (Also, great on Remette to give you a full refund and let you keep the knife like that! It speaks well to them as a company.)
@Wiscosouthpaw2 ай бұрын
That's the risk when buying most of what you collect online. But what can you do, right? Give it a shot. They can't all be exactly what we want. I would say though, as it pertains to locking systems, nothing gives that satisfying click when you open it like a liner lock. Haha. maybe a frame lock. But I get liking button locks as well.
@Sanguivore2 ай бұрын
@@Wiscosouthpaw You're definitely right about that! And I agree; the satisfying click of the liner lock on the Tena is actually some of the best acoustics out of all my knives. Hopefully one day I can live somewhere with an extensive knife store so I can spend a lotta time getting things in hand before pulling the trigger on them.

Glad you asked a pro for advice. The best sharpening system is a honing stick, plain cardboard and honing compound. You’ll get an edge that’ll cut the whiskers off a snail's sack without harming the delicate ball sack material….and the edge is durable. Man you must have 2k in pocket knives already!!😳

Its just a mass produced pocket knive made from pre-made stamped steel no different to the gozillion similar knives being made in china. They all look the same and are marketed to those needing something to play or fiddle with due to underlying anxiety. Perhaps a useful tool to treat mental health issues but as far as a high quality knife as say compared to artisan hand forged cuttlery. Its more like a pit bike compared to a F1 car.

It's so funny reading some of the comments. One person will tell me all about his 6 dollar wish.com knife while you talk about an artisan hand forged blade. For me, if I like it and it cuts, and yes, I do like to fidget with knives (I'm not going to self diagnose what that means about any underlying condition), then I'm happy to buy it. Enjoy your hand forged cutlery👍

It’s my EDC (have 2 actually). They seem to be child and woman proof; as I am yet to see either deploy the blade? As for them discharging in the pocket, I haven’t had that happen, but it wouldn’t be an issue because they can be deployed against ur hand and it just knocks them out of battery. Which means you have to pull the now free sliding blade all the way out to re-cock it if you will 🤷♂️. Definitely handy for a quick blade! Must have for sure!
