Princeton NJ was the "stage stop" for pre-railroad trips between NYC and Philly. Lots of hotels, inns and stock-support.

I have a book entitles "Wagons West 1590-1900" by Richard Dunlop that contains a photograph taken on 15 April 1868. The photo is of a railroad train of 15 flatcars carrying 30 Concord coaches from the factory in Concord, New Hampshire for delivery to Wells Fargo in Omaha and Salt Lake. That would hae been something so see.

Unless that story about the longest working stage horse is wrong, the horse would've pulled for an average of 55.5 miles a day, 300 days a year for 15 years to equal 250,000 miles. I think someone needs to check the math. You claim the horses pulled 2-3 hour shifts before being switched out. Even if the horse worked 365 days a year for 15 years it would have had to average 45.6 miles a day. Not likely.

So, I dont understand the switching of horses. There must have been some agreement ahead of time for someone willing to switch out animals.

Arabians have SHORT backs; having one less vertebrae (and one fewer pair of ribs) of other breeds giving them greater ability to carry weight. They are the undisputed champions for endurance competing in 100-mile races over diverse terrain in one day,

The Friesian horse was bred as a war horse. And descends from the black northern European Forest Horse with later interference from the Spanish horse. He could wear knights with their steel armor and was himself armored with steel plates. He was agile, strong, threatening, not afraid, so basically the first tank. ( so not for racing ) The Greeks and Romans were amazed by this horse and immediately wanted to use it as a multifunctional. That's how they got to England. The Friesian horse is the real deal and a mirror to the past. Thankfully, it has been saved as a race and a living monument of humanity and its resources. You could compare him to a Harley Davidson of horses. These have also served as war vehicles. The Friesian horse was at the birth of the U.S.A. He was there. Greetings from the Netherlands

Here in Australia, the equivalent of Wells Fargo was Cobb & Co. started by an american Freeman Cobb who saw the need to get people to the goldfields the same as in San Francisco which resulted in Wells Fargo being formed. Cobb and Co. is a part of Australian history.

If the whip wasn't used, including because just the mere sound of it could be frightening for man and beast, then indeed the question is why did it become such a key symbol for the driver?

Beautiful video program! I understand that driving and handling the horses of a stagecoach effectively was quite a skill and that during the days of the B-western a supporting or character actor by the name of Bud Osborne was employed a great deal for driving the coaches in the movies he appeared in and in other films, as well.

Does anyone have anything specific on "The Black Horse" of England? The only thing I have ever seen was the reference to the development of the Shire Horse. A book written about the early settlers of Wyoming makes a mention of Oregon Horses being crossed with "The Black Horse" creating an active horse of about 1200 pounds.

The Stagecoach Inn on I-35 in Salado, TX, had a genuine 19th C stagecoach in its main parking lot for many years. I remember as a kid stopping there to be photographed in the stagecoach. It was great, very authentic. Great review, thanks for posting.
