I'm gonna start out by saying this is at least a concise way of making a basic Reese in Serum. As you can see from the comments already on this video this is very helpful for people that maybe don't need a more detailed explanation of what a Reese bass is or where it comes from. So gj on that, good video. Now I'm gonna do the obligatory DnB producer tryhard thing and over-explain it to whom it may concern, minus the insults and condescending tone that defeats the whole purpose of presenting information that could maybe be useful to someone. Emphasis on 'to whom it may concern' XD Anywhooo The Reese bass actually comes from late 80s House and Techno music, most notably Just Want Another Chance by Kevin 'Reece' Sanderson. It features a Reese bass made on a Casio CZ-5000 that later got sampled in the classic Jungle track Terrorist by Ray Keith which shaped the Reese bass as we know it today. Noisia are absolutely goated for pushing the envelope of bass music and sound design in general but they didn't popularize the Reese as such. The fundamental principal of a Reese bass is a phase-cancellation. When you sum two identical waveforms together that are (partially) out of phase, meaning the positive and negative peaks of the waveforms don't align, you will get a lowering of amplitude every cycle that creates a rhythmic beating effect due to phase-cancellation. You can think of the waveform as a speaker moving in and out to create sound. If one waveforms phase is positive (+1) moving the speaker out and the other negative (-1) moving the speaker in the sum will be 0 meaning silence (no movement in the speaker). In other words they 'cancel' each other out due to inverted phase. Now if their phase isn't perfectly inverted the waveforms only partially cancel each other creating the aforementioned rhythmic beating effect. The frequency (or speed) of this beating effect is correlated to the pitch of the notes so sliding the notes up and down creates this speeding up and slowing down of the rhythmic effect. This beating effect can be achieved by detuning the waveforms relative to each other as outlined in the video. But you can also shift the phase of one waveform or use two different waveforms that only partially cancel each other out for example. TL;DR a Reese is made by using intentional phase cancelation summing two out of phase waveforms together creating rhythmic modulation of amplitude. The key being understanding the 'phase-correlation' between two waveforms and how they effect amplitude when summed together. Hope that clarifies some of the history and physics behind the Reese and spark some creative methods of making one!

Wow! Really nice short and sweet video man! Very easy to digest, and play around with yourself. I would actually have loved it even more if you for another time add a frequency spectrometer, just to show the evolvment and tweaking (visualizing) what is actually happening. Great explanation though!
