Swing in? So it can blow in?

FEMA Requires door to swing in so that debris will not block the door from opening. Simple, right?

designed to FEMA standards they can actually be quite resilient and offer more protection to those who don't have a below ground option. These things can save lives.

The wind has to be able to get under the above ground storm shelter to life it up. The newer models had a lot more huge bolt down.

I kinda feel like that door shouldn't have a knob and traditional backset. If something presses hard enough against that door from the outside, that backset can twist a little bit causing malfunction as well as all the weight possibly pressing those bolt locks to catch the door. With enough weight you may not be able to operate those bolt latches. Simple solution could be to store a hammer and pipe wrench in the unit. Nice though. I like those things.

The small spotted welds in the inside is to keep the four walls together when they full weld the edges from the outside. If you look closer at the outside wall edge weld it is one straight line alone the each edges.

Door should open out not in. Although the 3 dead bolts would lower significantly the chance of the door blowing inward. Most Florida homes not shelters though. The homes are built standard with the door opening in the outward position. Great vid. Will look deeper. Seriously thinking of making a purchase.
@King_TuTT2 жыл бұрын
they said in the video FEMA requires the door to be opened from inside. I would want that feature, as debris outside the shelter would block the door from opening outwards. an inward swing door is a must have.

AMUURICAN IDIOTS !!!! - Why would you put a storm shelter under the garage ? If the garage collapses in a storm or bomb blast you are seriously fucked as you've built your own TOMB !!! Obviously you have now given yourself ANOTHER problem as you need an emergency exit some distance away from the building - This is what we in the trade call a double fuck up !!!

Well I'll tell ya....the problem with lots of TN schools is they were built in the 50's and they have long central hallways which act as a wind tunnel. Where do you think they put the kids? In the hallway. Underground storm shelter? "Oh it's impractical." Nothing is impractical if you want it! The problem is the school systems mentality when it comes to funding. Do we want our children safe or do we want new play pretties? Usually play pretties rule out and they moan and groan about how they don't have enough money to do safety features - maybe next year - or the next - but the football team needs all new equipment and a jumbotron. A couple of our schools have basements but the access was never intended for the public so if there were indeed a weather emergency it would be like herding cattle down a very steep and narrow stairwell that usually is like a waterfall in heavy rain. Using the existing basement, wider and multiple access points could be created. The problem is a stampede of terrified people. Just one particular large storm shelter with a single entrance/exit would not do at all but something needs to be done because our storms are getting stronger each year and more frequent. Most of the school systems are like, "Oh that would never happen here. We'll worry about that at a later date." Then when it DOES happen you have lawsuits and outrage, "WHY DIDN'T YOU......WHY DIDN'T YOU"
