As a regular channel crosser, I travelled on these a few times, with a 1500 Austin Allegro! It was an interesting ride! ( The Hovercraft, not the Allegro)The propeller noise and vibration prevented normal conversation in the cabin and spray obliterated any view. It was better to have a central seat which limited the motion somewhat, but at times the craft would suddenly drop off a wave, 10 to 15 feet I think, then thump down on it's cushion as it re-established. It wasn't as puke inspiring as the cross channel ferries of the time. It's main advantage was that it was faster than the ferries, so the ordeal was over quickly! The worst cross channel ride was the Seacat, which only ran at speed on the occasion( once) that the engines and gearboxes worked properly, then it would chine hop, which was not a comfortable motion! At below planing speed, it wallowed badly. I blessed the day the tunnel opened!

I also remember taking the hydrofoil. The stewardesses handed out puke bags and at least 95% of the passengers used them. I did not due to years of travel and forcing myself to fall asleep amid the hurling!

Unfortunately it was the revenue from Duty-free sales that kept these viable. When that stopped, the business model collapsed.

Amazing to watch, sadly never got to go on one , but did ride on condors a few times they where amazing, the country has gone backwards with sea crossing

Yearly trips on the Hovercraft back in the late 70's, early 80's. I remember you couldn't see a thing out of the windows for all the spray but i was allowed a coke for the journey so couldn't of cared less!! good times

So dangerous to stand near the hovercraft when it's about to park. That thing can kick out small stones that can kill people. That said, this is a amazing sight. Along with the Concorde, we have truly regressed.

So very intetesting! It combined an aircraft with sea transport. I won't lie I've gotten an intrusive idea about that balloon part popping. What if it deflated? Would the hovercraft navigable as a ferry?

I really hope engineers are working on an evolution of this hovercraft idea. Smallermore powerful motors, sturdier skirt or a no skirt design.

A no skirt design would make it worse That's why they added skirts to hovercraft in the first place

@@Gargamoth that r&d came in form of a skirt to fix the issues of a skirtless design. I would love to see more hovercraft designs but skirtless hovercrafts are just impractical And not efficient.

Riding the hovercraft wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience. It was noisy, and you couldn’t see out the windows at all.

So weird. I was well aware of these hovercraft as a kid, I remember my father telling me about going on one in the 70s. But I always assumed they'd been consigned to the history books years before. I watched this video today, heard Everything but the Girl playing at the end, and assumed the video was fake because that song was too recent. Didn't realise until today that they remained in service right up to 2000. I was 14 then. Wish I'd have known.

You can still take a Hovercraft from Portsmouth to Ryde, Isle of Wight if you wanted to go on one. I believe it's the only passenger hovercraft in the world.

if you look closer, it seems to be SVHS or Hi8, meaning 480i, still much better than regular VHS.

From my judgement, the crossings were only smooth at sea state one. I was on one crossing from Dover to Calais that lasted 90 minutes because of the sea. Some of the passengers on that particular flight swore they'd never again board a hovercraft 😂. Furthermore, the inherent rumbling of the machinery always created a basic level of vibration, rattling etc. But it nevertheless was an exciting form of transport!

Oh god the memory of getting the ferry home after caravanning through Europe as a kid, waiting at Calais for the ferry the next day and so walking that bit over to the hovercraft port watching it come in. Terrifyingly awesome.
