Hey Ms. Jen I always enjoy all of your videos and I’m currently in the Pitch Lab! My question is do we have to sit and listen to every podcast and compliment every media contact? At 14 I started pitching my mom and self taught myself everything. And I’ve always been nice to the contact starting by saying I’ve come across your podcast/conference and truly love what you’re doing. But is it a requirement to have a personal compliment? I’ve tried this route and still have been ignored and wondered if it is necessary. I’m definitely not arguing that it doesn’t work. As I grow and learn more I’m learning different strokes for different folks and even then sometimes it may not always result in a win. But however, they will now know your name. Thank you so much!
@Stevenldaniel2 ай бұрын
And lastly just a suggestion I wish you could actually show us how to organically build your own list for those who don’t pay for any list. I’m at a point where I feel like I’m running out of contacts or how to find them. But I know there are millions of worldwide contacts.
@Stevenldaniel2 ай бұрын
And lastly as a pro tip I tried using ChatGPT to create a media list and it was actually pretty helpful. Although you still have to fact check everything it did help a lot!

Thank you so much for being a member of The Pitch Lab! I'm so glad that you get so much value out of our content! My short answer is no, you don't have to sit and listen to every podcast, but it is more effective to try to make a personal connection like you have been doing. It does really help to open the door a bit and get them to pay attention. It doesn't have to be a compliment, it can simply be something like, "I found it interesting" or "I'm a big fan of your latest guest". We do have a really affordable Media Contacts Database that you may benefit from. It's currently priced at $297 and can be purchased here: www.jenerationacademy.com/offers/dSf62RoT/checkout If you switched your Pitch Lab membership over to an annual membership, the media contacts database would be included free of charge. There are additional contacts in there that would be really helpful for you. I do like your tip about chat GP T and you are right about definitely having to fact check! We are updating the road map inside of Powerhouse Plus+, which, with your membership to The Pitch Lab, you have automatically been upgraded to with no additional charge. We are including some tips for integrating AI into the whole process. I love hearing that you are self-taught. That's how I started my career in PR and it sounds like you have been really effective at learning and implementing. I just love your story!

Thank you for this. I was looking on how to get started in PR. I currently have a Digital Marketing Company and one of my clients wanted PR done for a current project they were working on. I had no idea where to start or what to do... I just did. For my first-time attempt I secured a PR gig on a local daytime talk show. Now I am hooked. Your video has given me the courage to offer this as a service to my company. You just need to pull up those bootstraps and do it. Thank you.

Jenn, congratulations on your 19 years. This is our 20th. But it's been misery. I am glad you touched on how psychologically difficult our jobs are - and I have often felt I was working under a committee of judges, rather than clients.. but beyond perfectionism, fear of judgement, and not being good enough - it's double for us in crisis communication because people often resent having to spend money to get them out of their own jams - and their myopic lawyers who say "we're going to try this in court, not the press (knowing he's going to "no comment" the guy out of business), hence making us look like the jesters underneath their high and might court (they are not all like that - most of our work come from lawyer referrals, but the ones who are like that leave their damage). I saw a list of industries that have the highest suicide rate - we were like #5 out of top 10 - we take ourselves out more than cops. I've already told my daughter not to follow my footsteps if she wants to enjoy life. I almost became a janitor at Merck in my 20s. I may have a lot more money going into PR instead, but I think there would have been a janitor who enjoyed life. Also Jenn, I'm about 25 years sober. Sorry, you took the bartender's place tonight as this message really hit home. (And to think I went to the comments to add suggestions like Otter and HARO...) I recommend sobriety about as much as I recommend PR.

This is a lot of helpful information. I was an entertainment publicist for many years in Los Angeles about 10 years ago. It was actually my own company. We moved to Texas and I transitioned out of the business to help my husband build and grow his business. I was thinking about getting back into it before the pandemic started but not sure if I want to go back into entertainment PR or choose another niche. My only question is if working from home, do you book clients for interviews, public events etc…all from home without having to be present? I had to be present with my clients for press events, gifting suites and premieres.

So what is a solid number to start with as a beginner.?? Thats what is confusing. How do you lable each value with a price if we don't know how much it's actually worth. . As someone who has expirence contacts, team ect. All areas are covered on my end. But it's also what has stopped me. Not every client I have is having the same needs, so it's really difficult to know what to set X at to start. Is there a website that shows a rough breakdown of these items ? I have always looked at , without my drivers, I wouldnt ever have the expirence I have, great reputation of the first company I helped create, so I have that solid background, I just have 0 clue what anything is worth due to learning on my own from the ground up. Love the videos by the way, extremely helpful. ❤

If you are just starting out, I would calculate your retainers based on how long you think it will take you to complete the retainer each month based on competitive industry standard hourly rates (you'll need to do research to figure out what this is for your specific industry). Depending on the scope, a typical "beginner" rate for a monthly retainer is around $1.5K, but more advanced agency owners can charge $5-10K per month or more. But again, this varies depending on the scope & industry. I would recommend looking into my program The Agency Accelerator, as it walks you through all of the details on how to price your retainers! www.jenerationacademy.com/the-agency-accelerator

Hi Jennifer, As a longtime journalist working in New York I appreciate your thoughtful informational video. As a camera operator and content creator I would respectfully offer a piece of lighting advice. If you lower your key light from it's high centered overhead position it will add an important light to your eyes. In it's current position it leaves your eyes recessed dark and ominous. just sayin"
@jenerationpr11 ай бұрын
@aldendad2 I could not agree with you more... However, the overhead light is coming from two large skylights over my head, and no matter what I do, I can't seem to get a light to cancel out those dark ominous circles under my eyes. I think I need a brighter ring light. Can't exactly eliminate the skylights, and I like my desk where it is. Appreciate the suggestion!
