If he was afraid of them punishing him, why did he: 1. First submit his plays to the Master of Revels for censorship, 2. Perform them at court before the whole Privy Council and the monarch, 3. Have a guy he grew up with in Stratford publish his poetry, 4. Have most of his plays published with his name on them? Shakespeare worked for the Lord Chamberlain, who managed the Royal Court, and later for the King, himself. His plays were the epitome of tame. He altered his sources and bent history when the original would have given offense. When one of his most popular characters gave offense, he changed the character's name, apologized, and then even killed him off. You might need to look for another explanation for Shakespeare's shaky handwriting on his deathbed.

The manuscript includes notes written by Master of Revels Edmund Tylney, who was responsible for censoring all plays for public performance. He was paid seven shillings per play for this service. He answered to the Lord Chamberlain, Henry Carey, Baron Hunsdon, who just happened to be the patron of Shakespeare's theater company. After Elizabeth died, one of the new king's first acts was to name Shakespeare's company The King's Men. The idea that seditious or even merely offensive plays would be performed at court, by the Lord Chamberlain's and later King's own troupe of actors no less, is just plain silly. After Tylney, George Buck became Master of Revels. He once wanted to know who had written a particular play, and he asked Shakespeare. The Master of Revels worked very closely with the acting companies. Not that he really needed to. Shakespeare was a loyal company man. King James claimed Banquo as an ancestor, yet the historical Banquo was a henchman for Macbeth. Shakespeare changed him to a victim. The book Shakespeare adapted into The Winter's Tale had the mad king from Bohemia and the good king from Sicily. But King James was allied with the King of Bohemia, so Shakespeare reversed the roles, inadvertently giving landlocked Bohemia Sicily's coastline. @@bellottibellotti9185 The printer's name was Richard Field. He was about two years older than Shakespeare. His father was a tanner in Stratford Who had business dealings with Shakespeare's father. They grew up around the corner from one another. Field left Stratford in 1579 at age 17 to serve an apprenticeship with a French printer living in London named Vautroullier. After his master died, Field took over his print shop in Blackfriars (where Shakespeare would one day open an indoor theater and buy a house) and printed many of Shakespeare's go-to sources. He also printed everything Shakespeare wrote specifically for publication: Venus and Adonis, Lucrece, and The Phoenix and the Turtle. He got a shout out in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. When Fidele is asked whose body he attends, he says it's Richard du Champ (Richard Field in French), who is "a valiant Britton".
