you need to have a longer lead because when he lands after a jump he jars his neck up and that will hurt him and when he lands he slides to the side and you have to run to keep up with him

hi yes this was from 2011 (: he's still here with me, has a lot of energy still for his age and loves running around but we didnt do much jumping at all after 2011/2012

This is laughable. Rachel Alexandra had ABUNDANT early speed, and ran as a pacesetter or a stalker. Zenyatta had NO early speed. Zero. Zip . None. She ALWAYS won from the very back of the back, and that was often against horses who didn't have nearly as much tactical speed as Rachel Alexandra. Even in her 6 1/2 f. maiden race Zenyatta came from dead last. She was a locomotive when she got going, but she gave zero indication that sprinter-like early speed could ever have been trained into her, and that's what you need to win a match race. Rachel went the first furlong of the Woodward in 22.85, the half in 45.41, 6 f in 1:10.54. In the Haskell she was less than a length off the lead from Munnings, who set fractions of 22 4/5 and 46 2/5. Rachel lef at the 6 furlong call, in a time of 1:09 4/5. Zenyatta wouldn't be head and head with any horse running that fast early. Rachel would have been 12, 15 lengths or more ahead early on here, unchallenged on the lead. Unchallenged and given a loose lead, a great speed horse is not going to be caught. The best front runners are vulnerable if pressured -- e.g., Dr. Fager when offered a rabbit, Seattle Slew in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, American Pharoah in the Travers. Given a loose, uncontested lead, they're *much* harder to catch up to. Match races races are run, and won, like sprints, full tilt out of the gate (which is what is shown here). It's why Seabiscuit's trainer trained him for speed, to keep up with speedster War Admiral. It's why LeRoy Jolley trained Foolish Pleasure for speed, to keep up with the blazingly fast Ruffian. But Zenyatta, great as she was, could not run that way. And for the record -- I rank Zenyatta the better horse. More consistent over a long period, more versatile in terms of handling varying distance. I rank her the greatest U.S.-based female. In a normal race, especially given pressure on Rachel, I would expect Rachel to be passed in the stretch by Zenyatta. But in a match race (which is an artificial situation, and does not prove which is the better horse) at a mile and an eighth, maybe even 1 3/16, Z would not stand a chance against Rachel Alexandra or any other Hall of Fame caliber speed horse. And she sure as heck wouldn't be challenging for the lead out of the gate, because as great as she was, Zenyatta was simply incapable of running that way.
