Was kind of a controversial album at the time with the old punk vs metal thing. Listened to Dr Know from very early 80's and always thought it was kick ass. Glad that those divisions have mostly faded.

I too prefer the earlier recordings of this song. Quasi-related: I prefer the original recording of S.T.’s first album. I’m sure I saw a re-recording of the whole thing when I worked in a record store, and I was like: “oh noooo !!”

Pretty amazing how far this came from the demo...especially the crescendo section, whole new melodic changes, a lush string arrangement (you'll never make that choice again!) I'd love to be a fly on the wall for the evolution of that ...the hair on my arms stand up every time I hear that part, w/ out fail...I think it's the best piece of music on the entire album and just in the history of music...i must have pressed rewind on that section a hundred times when I first bought ES
