Very cool to see someone who I consider a classical trombone have such a developed doodle tongue and basic concept of how to develop all of the various multiple tonguing techniques. I guess many musicians of this generation often were able to play both classical and jazz/commercial styles at a high level.

Why can’t composers just avoid a low B natural on trombones? Give it to another instrument.

my uncle played in dance bands in the 50s , became my teacher and later senior high band director and taught me to this in the late 60s as he did all of his trombone students. but he taught me a bit different.... as you put a tiny bit of cold cream on your finger tips ... work it in your fingers tips like a woman would do before applying make up . then work it up and down the slide ... it is an art,,. you have to work at it some to get it work . but when applying water you can use just tap water but put it in a spray bottle that sprays a wide area ... this works the best from what I have learned... i just finished up doing this tonight .... got back into trombone .. just my thoughts on this

Hi Alan - When you say, "playing staccato on the trombone requires USING the word "top". I'm assuming that you mean to THINK the word "top" when executing staccato tonguing. As it isn't really possible to tongue/make the "p" sound in the word "top" while playing notes. The lips would have to be apart to create the "p" sound, which isn't possible when you're playing the horn.
@alanraph9433
@alanraph9433 5 жыл бұрын
You need to close the note with a consonant (top or tot) rather than simply giving it a burst of air (ta)
@Dan-o-Steely2000
@Dan-o-Steely2000 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan - I understand and like your "tot" approach to playing staccato. However, I'm still not convinced how one can possibly use the TONGUE to create the "p" in the word "top" while playing. One can THINK the word "top" when playing staccato but, and I repeat again, it is not physically possible to create the "p" sound without separating one's lips.

Drop the jaw, open the mouth and if the tongue wants to attack between the lips let it. You also might want to try the low tone exercise on the pedal Bb.
