Why aren't people adding links to these tier lists? So that you can look at the entire list of games yourself, save it, and come back. Does anyone have a link to this list?

Roguelike is a term with a very specific meaning and off topic for the type of games presented in this video. These games are more akin to classic arcade games and have very little in common with the game Rogue.

I'm mostly writing this comment for myself on what I think good rougelike game design is. 1. Everything should have variety. A rougelike is a genre that you're supposed to play dozens of times over. If the game doesn't have variety you're very quickly going to notice because we evolved to recognize patterns; Because the game is designed to be played over and over again you're going to see the patterns more often than a game of a different genre. A good rougelike should have variety in everything. A good rougelike should have variety in: Enemies; Bosses; Items; Builds; Characters/weapons; Levels/Stages. Because if there isn't enough variety in these things, the game will become stale quick. 2. The game should be skill based. In my opinion a good game is one where you can kill the final boss with nothing but the starting weapon if you're good enough (I don't like Slay the Spire, or most turn based things because of this). In other words if you lose it should always be your fault. 3. The game shouldn't be easy. Just because you can defeat the final boss with the starting weapon doesn't mean that it should be easy. Personally I like overcoming a difficult challenge, because I used my knowledge and skills to be able to overcome said challenge. I think that a rougelike should be very difficult to beat on your first try, but it should technically still be possible. That's all I think is needed for an ok rougelike. It isn't necessary for a rougelike to do any of the following to be good, but it does make them significantly better in my opinion. For bonus points the game should: 1. Make every item useful in some way. I think that every item should be usable in every build. Some items should obviously be better in some builds than others, but I think that the item should still be somewhat usable in build that the item isn't good in. 2. Make it possible to absolutely obliterate the game's difficulty (if you know how). It's just fun to have a run so powerful that the game has no chance of defeating you. I think that if you know enough about the game and how certain things work, you should be able to obliterate anything because you're both lucky and knowledgeable enough. 3. Encourage and reward risky behavior. I think that any game that encourages you to be risky is an interesting game. Any game that can cause you to have a short term risk, while giving you a long term benefit is a really cool idea because it forces the dilemma of: Are the short term drawbacks worth the long term benefits. 4. Have a bunch of items that synergize with other items. By making items have unique combinations, you can increase the replayability of a game because you want to see all the ways an item interacts with other items. An example of a game that does everything mentioned correctly is: The Binding of Isaac. The Binding of Isaac is a game that: Has a ton of variety in everything; Is skill based and possible to win any run; Is difficult (and only gets worse depending on how much you've done); Makes even the worst items usable in every build; Allows you to make build so broken that the game might die before you do; Has multiple special rooms that encourage you to make risky plays; Has almost every item synergize in some way with another item.

The fact that you're missing Dungeons of Dredmor makes me wonder if you included any true roguelikes (by this, I mean games that actually play like Rogue) on the list. I'll have to wait and see, I guess.

I clearly loved the video, as it's in several playlists. Restumbled onto this, and didn't know why it was boring me so much. Voice is great, clearly a channel I like, but all the information sounded basic, I already knew it. And I believe I learned it all from you. I will watch this again...just preferably intentionally.

After playing a few of these games before, I got the strong urge to make my own version. But delving deeper (and watching this video too), I realized that basically every mechanic I though of that I thought would be original is already found somewhere else. While the game I have designed (on paper only for now) would be by all accounts a unique mix, I think it would still come across as derivative, given all the common designs. While I think I'd have a lot to offer on the story and art side, I'm not sure if I should even bother?

LOVED megaman battle network early on (not a rougelike, and linear story RPG so you assemble it more linearly over time) but then... recently played Inscryption and LOVE it... Love that you get to make your own cards via combining existing ones and that's part of the progression in the roguelike sense. Looking for game with mechanics like that .. ?

Just wanted to say that this was a splendid, genuinely masterful, thumbnail. I don't typically enjoy these kinds of "lets talk about a genre" videos, but I specifically wanted to compliment you on your graphic design there. Nicely done.

Someone already commented that there are of course physical games that have a lot of these mechanics, but even looking at videogames your video shows footage from Hand of Fate which predates Slay the Spire. And even Magic the Gathering: Shandalar (1997) is essentially a deck building roguelike version of MTG

Overall Great Video! I have to say i disagree strongly with Inscryption. It‘s a great game, i am playing it right now, but the main story is not realy a roguelike in my opinion, and kaycees mod (which actually is a roguelike but wasn‘t even mentioned) is great but not S Tier.

Hades 1 introduced me into the genre. Hades 2 falls a bit short to me. Boons are more unique, but feel less impactful. It made it where i was able to beat everything the game has through skill alone, and while that sounds good, the RNG of a roguelike/roguelite makes the game more hype when you get a run that wins.

I just released my own roguelike deckbuilder on Steam today and watched the entire video. It really highlights some important truths about the genre. Here are my additional thoughts: 1. Slay the Spire was like an iPhone moment for the genre-it was already great when it launched and only got better. It’s tough to improve on something like that. 2. Many Slay the Spire clones have added unique mechanics, but often with unnecessary complexity. While this may offer more content for advanced players, it can make the game less accessible to beginners. 3. For example, I find the pathing system in Slay the Spire somewhat "boring" because it’s just a linear choice without much synergy. In my game, I removed the pathing system and focused on creating more combos during battles. However, I see many games keeping the pathing system without innovating it much. 4. I believe new mechanics can be created by adding more variations to the "board." In Slay the Spire, the board is simple, and the cards already exploit most possible mechanics. By making the board like a grid or multi-layered like in Monster Train, you can offer unique experiences while preserving solid card mechanics. Ultimately, my game, Food Fight Fiesta: Multi-Use Cards, features food cards that can either be eaten to heal or thrown at enemies to deal damage. It also introduces a grid system that makes players choose between card advantage and board positioning. The first median play time of 500 people after 9 hour of release is 18 minutes, which is not bad imo.

Music is so important for me in roguelike even if I might not super notice it while playing. So if I'm gonna replay your stage over and over, you better have great music Hell sometime for me music is part of the reward. Being able to hear Con Lentitud Poderosa while walking in the tunnel of commencement at the end of a Risk of Rain 2 run, is a feeling that hasn't gotten old even after 200 hours for me

Huge recommendation for Nightmare Reaper. I’ve sunk an embarrassing amount of time into it lol. It’s a boomer shooter roguelite with a ton of weapons and really satisfying gameplay. It is a REALLY lengthy game though. Also would be interested to hear your thoughts on Doomsday Hunters; it has a baffling amount of content. Another big recommendation is Against the Storm, which is a city-building roguelike. Every run feels very unique, the art is great, and there’s a really good amount of content

The origin of the genre actually didn't originate from a video game, but from deckbuilding Board Games such as Dominion (2008) and Slapshot (1982). In that manner it's similar to RPGs that descended from D&D
