You gave her too much space. Keep her in a test tube and then move her into a smaller nest once they have like 7 workers. I have the same queen with brood and 5 workers still only in a test tube. Also I don’t know if you have an incubator but I would recommend one. I keep all my ants in an incubator

HHey, insecticides are most definitely the reason your ants are dying. Avoid giving them fruits from the grocery store; instead, provide them with sugar water as their source of sugar. It's also better to dilute honey with water rather than giving it to them directly, or just stick with sugar water. Additionally, I would recommend withholding an outworld until you have around 15-20 workers.
@ejl12219 күн бұрын
100% agree about staying away from straight honey. I've had success with a 50:50 mix of honey with bottled water. I've also used sugar water occasionally.

@ Great! You could get some Camponotus species that grow quicker to make up for your lost colony. C. nicobarensis & C. maculatus are really nice species and grow fairly quickly for ants that big.

@ I think I’ll try to find some in the spring. I also have some new colonies I’m hoping to introduce into the story after the next episode which will be hopefully be about Ant Bonny getting ready for diapause assuming all goes well.

@ColePittsford2 ай бұрын
@@goldenantsproductions4707 It’s possible I’m wrong about her being infertile, but it’s nearly been six months since she was captured and they don’t seem to be making any progress. Her species is native to where I live so I figured if she does end up being able to raise a colony, she’ll be able to do that the natural way outside. I was also sure to angle the test tube slightly downwards so that water wouldn’t pool up and drown them.

hey cole!!! I have been keeping ants for 4 years now. I like the fact that you are also keeping Camponotus CA-02 (the biggest queen) and Camponotus Vicinus (the other two carpenter ants)! Also, the harvester ant queen (likely Pogonomyrmex Rugosus) is a very hard queen during founding stage, as in they tend to die very easily. I’ve had 14 of those queens once and only 3 of them survived to bear workers. Anyways, it’s really great to see another antkeeper!
@MistaGSpecialEducation3 ай бұрын
BTW, camponotus CA-02 grows really fast despite their big size, so expect CA-02 to have majors in less than a year :)

Hey cole! i think my comment was deleted so im gonna rewrite the whole thing.... i believe that i can help you out with your harvester ant queen, she looks to me like a P. Rugosus (I could be wrong and you might have said what she is but i forgot) but next time i would recommend either putting sand in the test tube with her or creating a dirt setup for her i highly recommend the dirt setup. UtahAnts has a good tutorial on them. Just look up UtahAnts dirt setup. Next i recommend you put them on some heat if your house is already pretty warm then you could probably just use a heat cable but if you house is cold like mine then i would try to hotbox them by putting the cable in the box with them and try to get a high air temperature (still try to include some variation of the heat so the ants can move accordingly and move the test tube to how the ants react). Then I would also recommend that you give the queen a few dandelion seeds and see if she accepts them unlike other sp of harvester ant this one is fully claustral so it isn't a requirement but it cant hurt to try it out. When i got my two first harvester queens (P. Occidentalis) i didn't do any of these and very similarly died like how yours did. So if you follow these steps your chances in keeping your next harvesters will be a lot higher. Anyways i really enjoy the videos and they are really fun to watch! Also if you buy anymore harvesters i recommend p. occidentalis i believe you live in cali so it makes the process for getting them kind of weird but i believe that you can still get them.
