I want to remove the title countertop like this do you know how 🙏
@HydeToolsКүн бұрын
Remove the edging material first. Then use a flat pry bar or chisel type multi tool and a hammer to get under one of the tiles. Pop one of the tiles at a time and work through all of them. You will then need to grind or sand any left over dried mastic from the tile before putting your new finish material on.

Another question is should you or must you stain or paint presssure treated wood on a deck?
@HydeTools8 күн бұрын
It's definitely not a must. Unlike raw wood, PT is designed to last a long time without the need for paint or stain. It basically comes down to aesthetics. If you like the look of a painted or stained deck, then go for it. In either scenario, the best way to ensure a long life for your pressure treated deck is to keep up with annual maintenance (cleaning, re-painting/staining).

I followed the steps and have small cracks where each hole was. How do I fix?
@HydeTools20 күн бұрын
Did you use joint compound to fill the hole (as opposed to lightweight spackle)? It's not uncommon for joint compound to get hairline cracks when it dries in a hole. That's okay, though. All you need to do coat the area again it with a very thin layer of joint compound. Because it's a thin surface layer it shouldn't crack, and it'll fill in the hairline cracks beneath. Good luck!
@greedymcmean20 күн бұрын
@@HydeTools I actually used the lightweight spackle. Same brand in your video. I wasn’t sure if I painted over it too many times or didn’t use enough spackle. Can I fix it with a light coat if spackle in the manner you stated for the joint compound?
@HydeTools20 күн бұрын
@@greedymcmean joint compound is typically preferred for a final skim coat, but the spackle can work too. if you have some fine grit sandpaper (120 grit or higher), you can err on the side of putting a little bit thicker of a coat of spackle over the area, then sand it smooth.

Never paint pressure treated. Even after the moisture is mostly gone the chemicals will want to leach. Paint will always peel off of pressure treated. Even primed. Opaque Stains are just as bad. They seal the wood and it cracks quicker. Only use thin oil based stain, teak oil or nothing at all.
@alanrawson-wg8ioАй бұрын
A contractor friend of mine told me not to paint or stain for 2-3 years. Then after a few sunny days do either one. I’ve followed his advice used Thomson’s water seal stain and it works well.

No drywall tape?
@HydeToolsАй бұрын
On an outside corner, no tape -- the corner bead is all that's needed. On an inside corner, yes you'd want to use tape. Oftentimes paper drywall tape will have a pre-formed crease in the middle so you can easily bend it 90 degrees for an inside corner.

What do I do if I tried to patch up the holes (incorrectly) and painted two coats over the entire wall and the area has small blisters?
@HydeTools2 ай бұрын
Use a multitool to "pop" the blister and clean out the hole. From there, you can follow the instructions in the video. Hopefully you still have some of the paint used to paint the wall; do a light sanding with a high-grit sandpaper (180'ish grit) after the spackle or compound has dried completely, and brush on a few coats of paint. If you don't already have a multi-tool and/or putty knife, take a look at our 2-in-1 Folding Painter's Tool, it's a multi-tool AND putty knife in one. hydetools.com/collections/multi-tools/products/stainless-steel-folding-multi-tools Good luck!

Thank you for this nice info. I have maintenance free deck which I believe the floor and stairs are made on plastic or composite wood which does not require painting. However the deck posts and under the deck is wood. Shall i seal the posts and under the deck or not? some ppl says that this would not be a good idea because it would trap moisture in the wood. what do you recommend? shall i paint it or not. thanks
@HydeTools3 ай бұрын
If your posts and structural components are pressure-treated lumber, there is no need to seal with paint or solid stain. However, if you're aiming to make your PT last as long as possible, there's no harm in applying water-repellent treatments (such as Thompson's Water Seal) and using a cleaning agent to remove any mildew that may be forming.
@haroldwonder4463 ай бұрын
After many years of building and repairing fences I would suggest that only semi transparent stains, water or oil based, be used after moisture levels are acceptable and most certainly on fence posts and boards that are new. "Solid" tint anything, traps moisture behind the thick pigment when it cracks from the heat of the sun. Then rot starts and damages the fence in a big way shorten it's life dramatically. Re stain every three to four years depending on the wear and tear or look and you should get 15 to 20 years out of that deck or fence.
@myradioonАй бұрын
I agree with everything you said. Never paint pressure treated. Even the semi-transparent 'stains' now are acrylic and trap moisture/peel.

What do you do with dryrot or damaged siding? Do you at least replace the rotted areas before paint or call a carpenter?
@HydeTools3 ай бұрын
It's highly recommended to replace rotting or damaged siding. Once you've removed the siding, you should also inspect the structural elements beneath the siding (sheathing, wall studs, sill plates, corner posts, etc.) to ensure the damage hasn't spread beyond the siding. Some painting professionals will take on siding replacement if it's minimal, but you'll likely need to call a carpenter if the damage has reached structural components. Good luck!

My mother and I painted our house after my fathers death with Glidden Endurance paint and it is now 18 years later and is still good. I am only repainting because the south side of the house with all the sun and heat has made the bottom half of the house begin to peel in places, just on that side. now that I am painting again I am wondering just how much sanding and scraping is necessary. My house has 3 good sides and one with moderate to low peeling or lifting. I have scraped the one side and sanded to try and get those peeling areas flat, so when I paint (eventually) you won't be able to see those spots. I have a feeling I may be overdoing it however and I really do not want to waste my time, if it doesn't need to be done. The heat is on the way and I have to get moving, so I was hoping to see what might be normal and what might be overdoing it! My siding is 70 year old redwood that is painted yellow and flat with no grain showing.
@HydeTools4 ай бұрын
18 years ago! That's astounding. You must have done a very thorough prep job for it to last that long. Kudos. Have you seen our other video with Jerry where he talks about prepping siding? kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKuzqKONra93pMk When it comes to prepping an exterior, scraping and sanding as thoroughly as possible is always going to pay dividends. Understandably, you don't want to waste your time and do more than necessary, but your 18-year paint job is proof that it ends up saving you time in the end.

I live in Wisconsin, and I have given up on painting pressure treated lumber. I primed and painted for many years, but it always ended up peeling and flaking off. I had to do touch up every year or two. Now I use untreated wood with a primer and the finish paint, and it holds up well to our seasons here.

Since discovering boiled linseed oil, I'll never paint or stain outdoor wood ever again. For some items I'll even use used motor oil. All paints and modern stains allow moisture in, but it won't let dry out, that's why it's peeling on you. Not to mention even the pressure traded wood will rot being constantly wet.
