There are 3 key items to look at: 1. Break even. How many years do you have to live in order to make your Money back? 2. Look at the mortality tables to quantify your annuity gamble. 3. Quantify your anticipated ROI by each year of life and graph the results. Conclusion: for me SPIAs are a lousy bet.

Did you miss the part about there not being an ROI...until you die? If you are buying annuities as a "gamble," as would be assumed, since you referred to "betting," you aren't buying annuities for their primary purpose...guaranteed, lifetime interest. If you want to gamble, go to a Casino. Either way, you do you. I LOVE my guaranteed income, my social security benefits, my 2 years of cash, dnd my Vanguard Portfolio, invested in VTI and VXUS! (95%/5%) Love the videos Stan.

@rightwingprofessor1356 The part of the video that says you do not get an ROI until you die makes no sense. Mortality tables are the key that assists in evaluating the worth of an annuity. It is a fool who would turn a blind eye or ignore quantifying the ROI over the expected life span.

My CFP recommended an annuity with an income rider that will have the amount increase for 10 years after it starts before the amount becomes fixed. So I will have a very nice floor with this and Social security I will have 85K eventually with the annuity up to 46k more than whatever social security COLAs are I am very happy with my floor.

Great question! Annuities are backed by the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. State guaranty funds also provide a safety net up to certain limits if an insurer becomes insolvent. I developed an anticipated retirement budget and subtracted out my expected Social Security benefit. That gap in expenses, a financial advisor looked at that number and said I could secure an annuity to cover that gap. I had a great deal of anxiety about market volatility and managing my portfolio, etc before. Once I got that annuity, my anxiety about market volatility went away. The annuity allows me to be much more aggressive in my growth bucket.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I'm contemplating supplementing SS with either a SPIAA, MYGA, or money market, depending on what interest rates are when I get there. Like you, I will be fine being 80-100% stocks with the rest of my 401k, if I have the necessities covered by guaranteed income. The 401k would be "play" money, like for travel etc.
@StanTheAnnuityMan
@StanTheAnnuityMan 13 сағат бұрын
That’s a fantastic approach, and it highlights one of the key benefits of annuities: peace of mind. By securing a guaranteed income stream to cover your essential expenses, you've effectively removed the anxiety about market volatility. This strategy, often called "income flooring," ensures your basic needs are met, allowing you to be more aggressive with the rest of your portfolio. I saw this Dave Ramsey video as well as another one where he called Social Security stupid. I then blocked all of his videos from my KZbin feed. Perhaps he is good for people who need some tough love to get out of debt. I hope you are successful in linking up with him because some of his followers could very well benefit from the security of a simple annuity if they only understood them.

Have bought 3 MYGA's from Stan, no issues and seamless easy as pie. And love those 5.8% rates I am getting these days. Run the inflation risk, but what is not a risk short of TIPS but they don't come close now
@StanTheAnnuityMan
@StanTheAnnuityMan 13 сағат бұрын
Thank you for your continued trust and for sharing your experience! It’s great to hear how seamless and easy the process was for you. Those 5.8% rates are definitely a strong selling point, especially in today’s market. As you mentioned, all investments carry some form of risk, but MYGAs offer a solid, predictable return without the volatility of the stock market. While inflation risk is always a consideration, it’s about finding the right balance for your financial goals. You’re right-TIPS have their place, but they don’t always match the current appeal of MYGA rates. Thanks again for your feedback, and I’m here for any future needs!

Using a fixed annuity as a bond replacement manages risk vs. having 100% at risk in mutual funds and bonds, etc.
@StanTheAnnuityMan
@StanTheAnnuityMan 13 сағат бұрын
Using a Fixed Annuity as a bond replacement can be a smart strategy for managing risk, especially compared to having 100% of your portfolio in mutual funds, bonds, or other market-sensitive assets. Fixed Annuities provide a guaranteed income stream, which can offer stability and protection from market volatility. Unlike mutual funds and bonds, Fixed Annuities are not subject to market fluctuations, giving you peace of mind that your principal is protected. This can be a solid way to diversify your portfolio and manage risk, especially in uncertain economic times.

If it walks like an annuity, and quacks like an annuity, it's an annuity, and it will be taxed as one. Ordinary income for IRA Accounts. NOW...there is a way to avoid taking the RMD from the annuity...IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER IRA, because you can take ALL your RMDs from ANY IRA, as long as it's not an inherited IRA. (Different Rules.) That is what I do. I take my RMDs from my Vanguard Dollars and I leave my IRA Annuity moneys invested , so it can keep the Internal Income Account growing by 8.25% annually.

A bond ledder of treasury bonds would be a better option for a bit higher return, more safety and a lot more flexibilty. But an annuity is better for the average Joe. An annuity grows tax free which makes it more attractive in a non IRA/401K account. Assuming 5% bond rates (true in Jan, 2025), one can invest $100,000 by splitting it as follows:: $7K - first year, $7k/1.05 - 1 year bond , $7k/1.05^2 - 2 year bond,... $7k/1.05^22 - 22 year bond. For a 65 year old man, $103,500 will pay close to 7% for 25 years which is away more than typical life expactancy.

I don't trust annuities. One reason is they seem needlessly complicated. Seems simple at first, then they bulk it up with optional riders, each costing more money, am I wrong? Then, some are linked to manufactured indexes which I've never heard of. Old axiom, complicated is the friend of the salesman... Another reason, they promise unheard of yields for safe investments. While we struggle for a safe 4%, FDIC insured, they promise, 7% or more? Guaranteed? Another axiom "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is..." Competitors say that once you sign up, you'll never hear from them again... Tell where I'm wrong here.

Every annuity sales person I have ever delt with, when I tell them what I want, goes into the schpeel about different products. I know what I want to buy, but it is not what they want to sell. I can go on the internet and buy hindreds of investment products. But for annuities, I have to put up with all the fear mongering about running out of money and 50% market crashes. None of them have set down, looked at what we get from SS, what our expenses are and what our porfolio returns a year.All they seem to see is the porfolio size and immediately go into the sales schtick to get as much into whatever product THEY feel we need to be in. Sorry for the rant. But I have a really bad taste in my mouth with annuity salespeople or financial advisors who sell one companies product.

That’s a smart strategy! By using an annuity to create a solid floor alongside your Social Security, you're ensuring a reliable income stream for yourself while allowing your IRA to grow untouched. To me nothing wrong with an annutiy for garunteed payments if one can afford to buy one. I bought one that has an income rider so will stary at 33600 and move up to 45k. An annuity in an IRA account is a sure way to get the agent a commission. Over the years I have grown to dislike annuities. In my 30s my wife and I were sold annuities. After 25 years the return on those annuities was less than 4%. The agent moved to different funds within the annuities using the sell low buy high strategy. If I had put that money into a brokerage account in an index fund my money would have been 5 times what was in the annuities. When I hear annuity I hear RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave R. says never buy an annuity or cash value life insurance. They are a financial tool, just like a mutual fund. Not using all the tools available is stupid. Stan, I 100% agree that the services you provide would be complementary to the services that Dave provides. You are more focused on establishing the safe foundation of a retirement plan, aka the floor to meet living expenses without out worry of market turbulence. Dave, on the other hand, tends to focus on the growth side of the portfolio. A plan that allows the individual experience both growth and an element of SWAN (sleep well at night) would not use an all or nothing approach. This is why we have different tools in the toolbox! Would you trust a mechanic who promises to fix your car with a hammer and only a hammer?
@StanTheAnnuityMan

Thanks for the thoughtful comment! You’re absolutely right - building a retirement plan isn’t about choosing one approach over the other. It’s about creating a balance.
