Caligraphy takes long. Writing the actual characters takes less time than writing them in English. Think of it this way. Writing the word Earth, you make 10 strokes. Writing Earth in Chinese, there are 3 strokes, 土. Fire has nine strokes in English and 4 in Chinese, 火. Complicated words like Love in Chinese, 爱, have 10 strokes, but "Eating" in English has 11 strokes. Maybe when you write a capital E then there are an extra 3 strokes, but you get the point.

Writing the characters normally with a pen or pencil is what I'm talking about being faster, try writing anything neatly with a brush and it will be difficult.
