Thank you for the videos! I'm trying to do something similar but not based on a network, just physical access. Basically a steaming days map showing where you can reach after a day of sailing. Would you know of any tool or technique to achieve this?
@rhumbline
@rhumbline Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes, I've always wanted to do that. One idea I had to achieve that was to create a cost surface with "cost allocation" areas acting as the service areas. You could create variables based on wind direction and/or tide, etc. No simple plug-and-play method that I know of, of course. But a fun analysis to implement.

@@rhumbline Thank you for the quick reply! Since I've never worked with cost surfaces before I might simplify my problem and do a 'steaming days' map instead!

@@wrdfanbasilone4139 Another simple way assuming "euclidean" space (no tides/wind) would be to do a proximity raster (from a source point). This could then be reclassed using raster calc inequalities for binary rasters-or, you can even use the contour tools (polygon or line) by defining an interval based on total number of meters (output is usually meters if you're using a UTM coordinate system). 1609.34 per mile, 1852 per nautical mile. Then color code based on expected NM per day. Have fun! Ping me your map it would be fun to see. Find my contact on rhumbline [dot] us. Cheers

Hi thanks for the video. They have been helpful. Please do you have any videos on counting buildings or homes within a service area. If not can you recommend any tool. I am doing 3 step catchment floating area analysis and needed that. I have tried zone statistic, count points in a polygon and non worked

Greetings, thanks so much for your comment. I could see a number of ways to achieve that, but it might be best to get more information about your analysis. Feel free to reach out to me via email from my website "rhumbline [dot] us" and I'll be happy to set up a brief call. One solution might be to use a buildings file from OSM (depending on where you are in the world), then convert polygons to centroids, then count points in polygon for each ring in your service shed (being careful to manage inclusive/exclusive boundaries). If you don't have building data, then parcel or address data would be the next best bet. You would also want to come up with a proxy for "home" as opposed to other types of buildings. All the best, Ben

I dont have the options for Jenks. Ive created an NDVI from a multi spectral image I can pick my color ramp and get it to look correct but I only can pick "equal interval" "Continuous" or "Quartile" Im using Version 3.10.14. Any ideas?
@rhumbline
@rhumbline 2 жыл бұрын
Greetings Nick. I believe that you're trying to do a symbolization scheme using "single-band pseudocolor" for a raster with real (decimal) values. Is that correct? For continuous phenomena like this, especially in raster, Jenks isn't a baked-in option. Instead, they provide you with different options for how to spread the color across all of the pixels/cells. Jenks and the options mentioned in this video are specifically for symbolizing vector data with numerical values. If you'd like to do a quick screenshare, feel free to contact me via my website and we could jump on Zoom for 10 minutes. Best of luck! www.rhumbline.us

Hi, thankyou for the extensive explanations in this video and the use of different tools. However, when I use the service area tool (layer) not a network but only one line is generated with the 'travel costs' I indicated. Do you have a clue why you got the raster and I got only one possible route? Kind regards :) [Update] my raster was not a 'real' network but consisted of individual lines
@rhumbline
@rhumbline 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, many apologies for not getting back to you. Without seeing your particular problem on-screen, it is pretty difficult to say. Sometimes if lines don't connect *exactly* vertex to vertex, the algorithm assumes the network is not connected together. It needs the node locations to be snapped to each other to form a network dataset. The other thought would be that perhaps your cost parameters are off. With some of the tools the impedance is defined by the base units of the coordinate system you're using. If your coordinate system is not in meters or feet-but perhaps you're data are unprojected and using decimal degrees-then you're likely getting very strange results. Please feel free to contact me via my website if you'd like to have a quick screenshare. Good luck! www.rhumbline.us
