DoM deserved to be as big as all the 70s bands that now roll off the tongue. Maybe the world wasn't ready for them.
@barmybee612 ай бұрын
Saw them in Coventry in 77 or 78. The place was empty and they delayed coming on. But what a brilliant band. So talented and innovative. .It's a shame people remember the Pistols but not the Doctors of Madness

Marie's telling Joe: "He left my breakfast on a mirror With a blade but not a word about why he's gone" You see, Joe's her best friend He makes the time go more slowly And the pain seems much sweeter when he's there Oh but the boys, the boys in the back room Are so loud and so thoughtless They're insensitive, inseparable, insane They've never been in love They just read all the books about how it should feel And it all seems so awful now it's gone They ought to be like me, just get what you can That way you know it's real It saves all the heartbreak later on Oh Marie starts to cry but she doesn't know the reason And the baby starts to cry, it's getting late Yeah and Joe wants to give her Sixty-times-a-minute romance But instead just holds her hand, decides to wait He says: "I've spent so much time in love I've known suicide scenes and cul-de-sac dreams And I broke my heart on a girl who came from France Love only comes once they say You should hold it close or it slips away But I really couldn't stand to miss this chance No, I really couldn't stand to miss this chance" Oh Marie's telling Joe: "He left my breakfast on a mirror With a blade but not a word about why he's gone" Oh and I never really thought about the sadder implications That chase me from the cradle to the grave. You see, I've never been in love I'd just read all the books about how it should feel And it's hard to live in minutes instead of years If I could forget his face, forget this place and forget the waste I know I could easily forget the tears Oh, it would be so easy Written by Richard Strange, played by Doctors of Madness, one of the most moving rock songs of all time

I think you are absolutely right. But perhaps their brilliant uniqness worked against them in the 70s. By carving out their unique sound, they didn't really fit into yhe punk scene or rock scene. So despite their fantastic albums, they never got the popularity they deserved. Having said that, real music critics recognise the DOM greatness.

Back in the '80s, I was mates with a band from Darlington called 'The Magic Bastards'. At the time, I'd never heard of 'Doctors of Madness', (I wasn't introduced to your music until the early '90s.) In retrospect, I can see they were very like you, only about ten years later. 😃 'The Magic Bastards' were never more than a local band from Darlington: but they did once support 'Joe Strummer and the Latino Rockabilly War' at the Mayfair in Newcastle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6nXpqesr9RgopY
