@darleneelizabethmusic you should definitely give it a go if you have some sort of audio interface. All you do is patch one of the sockets labelled 'from device' into any module that can process sound - filters, reverbs etc. There's some crazy stuff you can do!

To start with separation between notes, a shorter envelope will do in a pinch. If you need longer notes, then patch sample hold. You would send the v/oct from sequencer to input of S&H and use the sequencer gates to trigger S&H. This limits the note selection to just when the gate hits. If you like to use a quantizer , the Sickocell quantizers have a trigger input to perform this sample hold trick right there at the quantizer inputs. 🎉

Welcome to the wonderful world of modular! Enjoy your explorations… I’m sure a couple of folk have already mentioned but the MindMeld Mixer/Auxpander combo is by far the superior mixing solution in VCV, it also allows up to 4 sends in stereo. Also, a tip for send FX - Always take the dry signal out on the reverb/delay module, otherwise you’re doubling it when you send it to the reverb/delay etc. Very enjoyable video and a new sub for thee here… Happy patching! Edit - I noticed after I’d typed the comment you’d taken the dry signal out from the reverb :)

Sometimes you would want to have the random cable colors to make things a bit more random and kind of encourage moving things around randomly as a result. Using a color coded system of cables definitely helps in complex patches or ones where you ONLY want specific things to happen. A lot of this stuff really is ultimately trial and error until you find something you like or find a workflow that makes sense to you
@darleneelizabethmusic
@darleneelizabethmusic Күн бұрын
thank you so much for saying this! this was so encouraging to me, because sometimes I do feel a little constrained by the colour coding system of cables, sometimes I'll be stuck thinking "is this a trigger or modulation? should it be blue or green?" and it can take me out of the flow of creation a bit! I want my patches to be easy to follow, but I do think it would be nice to use some random colours when I'm experimenting!

@darleneelizabethmusic the originals were made open source, so for the same reason you can get the exact sounds from their vcv clones, you can get the exact sounds from the many clones by major (and minor) module producers. After Later, CCTV, CalSynth, TLM Audio, Big T Music, Michigan Synth Works and dozens of smaller producers. Anybody but Behringer ;) Many make a large selection of them, and/or in black or light panels, so you can still have them all in a cohesive look. You can also get them in alternative sizes and control layouts if you're building a mini rack or prefer sliders. The hardest part is deciding from all the choices.

Beat me to it, was just about to say the same thing! It's also polyphonic, which is the big advantage for me. I prefer Surge Twist VCO, which is also a polyphonic Plaits clone but has easier to use modulation inputs. I find the user interface slightly confusing with Pallete. Also, particle noise is my favourite. If you leave the trigger unpatched, it fires randomly and is great for making dripping water or rain sounds, especially if you use the full 16 channels of polyphony.

If you use AUX to connect effects like plateau you should normally turn the DRY signal all the way down and WET all the way up. That is because the Mixer itself mixes the effect signal to the DRY signal, so you'll only need the wet signal. Else you get , i think, a 2 sample Feedback loop. Each cable is, as i know, 1 sample delay.

@@darleneelizabethmusic I think that the workflow in a DAW like Ableton is completely different to that in modular synthesizer systems. What has always helped me a lot was separating the individual functions global clock mixing and global effects sequencers, chords... creative sound design with individual effects modulation gates and triggers The chaos at the beginning is definitely the number of modules if you want to work with a DAW-like note and pattern-based control, maybe the tracker module from Biset is right for you kzbin.info/www/bejne/mobUanupjNx3qdk The clock module from Biset is also cool because it is synchronized with the tracker Or there are a few modules from Entrian that allow you to import MIDI files. The nice thing about VCV is that you can play around a lot and there is actually no wrong way sometimes, for example, modulation in the audio area is much cooler than with an LFO have fun

My starting Points in VCV , years ago, i used a paper to make a sketch of what i'll expect . Next was a template with a mixer (from mind meld) EQ , some effects ... Audio out. save that template so you can start up on this point. Next step was experimenting with some modules OR i had a sound in my head that i'll archive Most time i spend in searching the right module for some special effect. If i was ready with a patch i select the part of the modules and save the selection as selection, which cannow easy be used in an other patch.

That’s such a cool idea, to draw out the expected outcome on paper. Especially with this all being on the computer it feels so intangible, drawing it out sounds like a really great exercise! I also really like the idea of saving a template of modules, like having a physical eurorack set up that would stay the same until you changed it. I’m going to give that a try!

I see you're both using Plaits trigger in, and an extra VCA/Envelope. I'd suggest not using the trigger in, since you're now using Plaits' built in LPG. If you leave trigger unpatched, it will create a continous tone you can shape with the VCA/Env. Also, the AUX out in RED ONE mode is just awesome for spooky eerie patches.

It’s so good! I love how many different sound engines it has, it’s really powerful! I was actually using Ableton to trigger pigment’s sequencer, and to automate parameters. I made a midi clip that was the length I wanted the song to be, with just one note that ran the length of the whole song so that the sequencer in pigments would run, and I moved the macro knobs while the piece was recording, so Ableton recorded the automation and then I was able to record the piece again with Ableton automating the parameters so you can’t see my mouse moving :)

This may have already been answered re: the seq-3 playing pitches when the trigger is turned off: with sequencers being independent of triggers, we sometimes need to use a sample and hold module triggered by the same trigger or gate as the envelope. That way, the signal at the start of the trigger/gate will be sampled and held until the next trigger/gate regardless of whether the sequencer keeps outputting different CV values. Omri Cohen uses this technique a lot in his VCV Rack tutorials 🙂

How in the world do you figure out what module does what when they have such obscure names? I've tried using Cardinal, which has a very reduced set of modules, but is MIDI-enabled. Still, if I'm looking for an envelope generator, but all I see is weird names like "Cat Vacations with Woodchuck" I wish there were categorical lists available.
@darleneelizabethmusic
@darleneelizabethmusic 16 күн бұрын
That sounds so frustrating! The VCV Rack library has tags, which makes it a lot easier to find modules by function, but the free version of VCV rack can’t be used in a DAW like cardinal. I wonder if maybe there’s a forum or something out there where people might talk about their favourite cardinal modules to use for different functions - it could be a lot of reading, but it might help to get to know all the crazy names! “Cat Vacations with Woodchuck” sounds like an interesting module!

Hahahahaha Real life modules also sometimes have weird names. The whole idea with this stuff is to load the module and just start hooking things up to it to see what you get. A good thing to do is have a scope module or two in the patch so you can send outputs if there are any and etc to the scope so it gives you an actual visualization of what the signal is doing. Also, look at the right click menu on these modules because often times it will give you at least some clue as to what the module does or what can be changed from default
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 2 күн бұрын
Sometimes the names also weirdly make sense when you learn what they do. For example, in real life there is a module named Pamela's Workout which is kind of odd... But it's a clock module. Think about what people do when they exercise or work out - they try to keep a rhythm. You know? "one and two and three and four then step and two and three and four then slide and two and three and four now to the left and two and three and four"

What's important to understand is that melody and triggers are two separate things. So the melody set by the knobs will always go through the quantizer. Then imagine turning the volume up and down with the envelope. Since you have a long attack and decay, the trigger will start and it will play over a stage that isn't active. At this point it's something you don't want, but when you start getting creative, you could create two paths, one with short snappy blips to sculpt the individual notes (no attack, short decay) and a second one that goes through the reverb (with different AD(s)R settings).
@darleneelizabethmusic
@darleneelizabethmusic 16 күн бұрын
That’s so well explained! Thank you, that helps a lot!
@leftcoastline
@leftcoastline 2 күн бұрын
In similar fashion, the subharmonicon will only retrigger the envelope after envelope completion, so if you stretch attack + decay over the note interval like this, you can get cool rhythmic patterns that differ to the note intervals, just like this. Sometimes it messes up your melody and sometimes you find gold. As with all modular, what can be a problem in one context can introduce you to a whole new concept you might never have considered in another.

If still sticking to the default modules, the "Gates" module will also help with some of the timing stuff in regards to gates vs. triggers. At least that gives the ability to set the whole pulse duration of the gate that the envelope will build upon. That can also get a bit more mileage from the decay and sustain parts of an envelope too, depending on what you're trying to do. For whatever reasons it's not under "utility" or "logic" categories, so it's a bit "hidden" from the usual way of filtering modules to find specific things more quickly. It's under "polyphonic" for some reason, but that category is almost laughable as it applies to anything that supports polyphony - rather than polyphony-specific functions. I suppose that's one of the head-scratcher quirky things about VCV Rack?
@darleneelizabethmusic

Oh that sounds great! I’ve used the gate module before, basically just to try the “flip / flop” outputs, but I haven’t tried using it to determine the specific duration I want for gates! Your intuition is right. The triggers coming off of SEQ 3 only start the envelope, they don’t act as a gate even with clock pass through. When the release is set long it keeps the envelope open to let the pitch information coming from the SEQ 3 to the VCA. You can “shut” the pitch envelope gate a couple different ways but here’s one: mirror the CV 2 out of SEQ 3 with the trigger pattern to modulate the release time on the envelope. Turn the knob below release all the way right to enable CV modulation of the release length. -10 on CV 2 step shortens the release to 0. You have a lot of control over the envelope this way. Hope this helps your journey with VCV. Cheers!
