I got the af screw drive one from the 90s, superb build, on micro 4/3 Olympus internal image stab, great optics but when pushed in high contrast @f4 equiv 600mm chromatic abberation is there but not a disaster. Ihave the 300mm 2.8 similiar era and its tooo heavy to carry around, Ken Rockwell likes it, not used it yet, but great to look at !!!.

I've owned the 300 f/2.8 VRII for many years now, do you think the 400 f4.5 is worth selling the 300 to upgrade to a Z mount lens?
@TomMasonPhoto27 күн бұрын
I haven’t sold my 300 VR II or picked up a 400 4.5 for my kit to replace it. The only lens in my mind that replaces a 300mm 2.8 will be a Z mount version!

Oh the new 600mm Z is light, easily handhold-able for me for a full day, yes not up at my eye all the time but still great for more run and gun style!

We loved seeing this first episode. A great start of the trip: the landscape is phenomenal and the wildlife is amazing. And we think it's very interesting for other people to see all the gear you brought ☺

Here in snowy Montana I typically overexpose by 1-3 stops...I don't care about blowing out the bright snow highlights, I'm concerned about the darker otter, bison, elk, etc.

Hey Tom, Great video mate and certainly some lovely images to boot! Liking the fisheye shot at the end, which reminds me I need to use mine more often. Don’t get much chance to watch too many videos these days due to work, but glad I watched this one! Good tips too. Cheers Rich 👍

@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
Price never defines how much I love a tool! 100% I love looking back at some of the pioneer early wildlife photographers, stunning work captured in the fledgling years of photography, with manual glass, slow speed films! The images amazing for the day are still awesome to today, its just with added tech and gear photographers have been able to keep pushing boundaries thats rather amazing. We are certainly spoilt today, and have far less excuses!

Good afternoon! Having tried the 800 mm and 600 mm f4 lenses, which one would you recommend for the highest quality picture, taking into account the convenience of operation?
@smallfarmfunАй бұрын
Tom, I love your content! You said in this video the 300mm 2.8 is gone. Does that mean you no longer have it or don’t use it very much? I am debating that lens or the cheaper 400 4.5. I do birds for the most part and would have to work harder with the 300 but the stop and a third may be worth it.
@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
The 300mm 2.8 was just gone for this trip! It’s my favourite lens, and won’t be leaving my bag ever, I’m hoping for a Z mount version! The 400mm 4.5 is a nice lens, far more portable and light weight, but I wouldn’t ever want to be without my 300mm 2.8!
@Dan.gibson.photographerАй бұрын
I used to have an old Minolta 300mm f2.8 and a Sony 200-600mm now I have the Sony 300mmf2.8 Gm and its almost half the weight around 1.5kg the weight of a 70-200 f2.8.

It’s fascinating, sad and sometimes a bit rude that people with english as their native language almost never can or even seem to try to pronounce, to them, foreign names of people or places when being in that specific country. We who don’t have english as a native language always try to do that, just to be polite. You really should try better Tom when going outside UK. Otherwise really good presentation as always.
@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
I’ll take that on board, thank you, I didn’t mean to cause any offence, I actually always struggle with other languages and often find them a struggle, so sorry about that!

Great video Tom! I was wondering how you anchored the camera trap to the side of the bank? I couldn't see in your video if it was on a stake or something else.
@A.WhiteawayАй бұрын
Hi Tom, Nice video. I have a quick question. I just bought the 300mm F2.8 MK1 lens for my Z8 and i am using the FTZ II adaptor. Does the VR in the lens being on, affect quality on mirrorless nikon cameras. There is always a debate about whether VR should be left on or not. I just wanted to know your experience with it on the Z9, but whether it is worthwhile maybe turning the VR off at higher shutter speeds and only using it for some lower shutter speeds.
@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
I’ve personally always turned off VR when my shutter speed it 1/500 and above, all the way back to the DSLR days and still do! I find with my Z9 and Z8 they seem to perform better with the VR off on the lens at higher shutter speeds as sometimes you get some “jumping” in the VR when working at the higher frame rates we now have! Hope that helps

I use spot metering with an asterisk, with this metering the highlights never burn out. [ o ]*
@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
Yes highlight priority metering is also a great mode on more modern cameras - often combined with +1/3 over exposure for perfect exposures every time!

Hi, I am quite new to photography and learned alot through your videos, thank you for sharing so much! You made me comit to photographing wildlife. At the moment I can use someones Nikon D3400 with a tamron 70-300, the scratchy autofocus kind you described in some videos 😅 It works for now, but I feel like I miss out on more focal length, also I want to buy my own camera. I watched you video about the D3 being a possible choice, but that video is quite old. I looked at a D7200, D610, D800 and possible the Z6. Around my area they are pretty much the same price second hand. Which would you recommend? And is the 300mm f4 or 200-500 from nikon still a good choice of lens. Even with Z6? It is alot of questions, sorry 😅 I just really admire your work and expertise.

New subscriber here from DownUnder. I’ve watched hundreds of different wildlife presenters on KZbin. I really like your delivery style Tom. 👍 I’ve accumulated far too many fine Nikon lenses over the journey, (inc the 200 f2 fatboy), so looking closely at downsizing & getting hold of one supertele (the 300mm 2.8 VRII), hence how I found your site. Looking forward to your new travel content and info on Botswana (on your email list now too!). Thanks for your content. 🇦🇺

Very nice scenes from Svalbard. I was on Svalbard in 2017 and travelled with a group of photographers for 11 days on a sailing ship (Noorderlicht) up the west of Svalbard to 79°. We were able to photograph the many icebergs and various animals. A unique experience. Thanks for sharing, I will gladly leave a sub 😊👍

Great video and looks like it will be a very good mini series...but OMG Tom how many lenses? makes me think no way could I do a trip like this with just a 24-120 or a prime
@TomMasonPhotoАй бұрын
Yes It was quite a bit of gear 😆 although nothing compared to when I also have camera traps! Mainly because I knew there would be reasons to use both the prime 300/600 lenses, and wanting some redundancy incase something got broken! I totally forgot I didn’t mention the 17/28 that’s also on the Z6 iii filming… but I could easily shoot a trip like this with just a 24/70 + 300mm 2.8 - maybe a 1.4 TC - but often I do like to have the options and the 135 plena is becoming a must have with me!
