This is based on holywood and not on historical facts. Real shield walls were just one line on people standing with their shields next to each other, not a roman testudo line.

This doesn't look so practical. Spears will manage without difficulties to enter the gaps, the guys behind the shields can't see and thus can't react. This creeping forward while crouched will tire you out within 20 meters. Plus, the second and third row guys have to stretch out their arms. How long can you manage that with a heavy shield?

The shield wall is not an offensive move, it's more of a stand your ground / impenetrable defense tactic. Did you see them do it in Vikings?

@@nemipiu You're linking me a scene from a TV show made in the 2000's. Back then, battles involved many hours of skirmishing before an actual clash. Almost never in that period in time would you see an actual full-on clash like you see on TV

Shooting the muskets will punch a few tiny holes in the wall and that might cause a few bigger holes that'll be quickly covered... The bayonet basically works as a small spear for stabbing, not slashing, and it might get stuck in a shield... With casualties, maybe heavy casualties, I think the viking shield wall would survive a squad of musketeers with bayonets!

@@nemipiu but a soldier without Formation will always be much faster. Now come from 2 sides and then they have to break the Formation or get flanked and killed.
