Hey Brandon. Late to the party here, but your video came up while searching on Crower 61002 info. How did you like it? I have one that I may use for an upcoming build

If you intend to get the snow blower for it I suggest you have the dealer sell you the front end one with the hydraulic controls and put a motor on the chute. Only if it snows where you live. I live in Eastern Ontario Canada. It really snows here.

Don't worry, you or your wife will find plenty of jobs for that "little" tractor. I have the old BX 2360 tractor. By the second winter it had paid for itself. I'm in negotiations now for a new BX23S I want the backhoe and I want the cab. I talked with the Dealer the other day, but he hasn't called me back. I want the new BX because my old snow blower, sub frame, snow blade and mid mount PTO shaft will work on the new one.

I have a ton more footage to post. I got way down in the weeds on this light video and it is taking forever to get it done. I've got a three point trailer hitch I built and a simple rake design that works with it.

Good morning Brandon, I see it’s been 8 years since you posted this and my question is have you done any cutting with it, I picked up a 117E as someone else has mentioned in here and I ordered a new belt at 70” have it adjusted as much as possible snug but when I try to cut a shaft it slips so bad I can’t even get started. How tight is your belt and how much of a cut can you take out of a shaft? 16th 1/8”. I’m not into any real critical work but just making parts for the local scrap yard. Thank you

Yeah, I've used it a lot. It isn't clean and pretty anymore. I didn't use a leather belt. I got one of the synthetic ones, can't remember what it is called. Probably got it from McMaster-Carr. I bought some belt clips and an old lacer tool and just made my own belt. Don't remember the length, but when it is loose, it is just barely loose enough to move to a different pulley. I actually have to move one end to a smaller lower pulley before I can go over the next bigger pulley on the spindle. I think the deepest I have cut in steel was about 1/4", but it didn't seem happy. Speed was very slow. It's been a long time. Supposedly it will cut 3/8" in one pass, but I haven't tried it. Might be able to do that in aluminum.

Hi Brandon, I'm trying to find out what size screw is used for the 16" South bend clutch knob. I know it's been a few years since you posted this, but if you could tell me the dimensions of it, it would be greatly appreciated.

i was reading through your samba thread and saw this "AA dished 1700 P&C set" then i looked more closely at the engine assembly photos. you went with 85.5's? so you're running stock 1585 displacement?
@flpanhead
@flpanhead 7 жыл бұрын
I had to go back through and read my own post to understand what you meant. I did buy a 1700 P&C set, but I only mentioned it because it was ordered with the 85.5mm 1585 P&C set and some other parts from AA. I bought the 1700 pistons for the Type 4 engine I wanted to build, but haven't started on yet. I used the stock size 85.5mm ones in the engine in the video.

How fast do you feel comfortable running your spindle and primary drive gear train? Mine says max RPM when it new in 1943 was 750RPM. That VFD seems to have the ability to spin it a lot faster, but at what cost to bearing life?
@flpanhead
@flpanhead 2 жыл бұрын
I know this is a really old question, but I thought I would answer anyway while I am in here. Since that video was made, I have had to replace the VFD with another similar one. The original one got fried during a storm. I have it set up to show the motor frequency on the display and can adjust it with the knob. So when it is set to 60 (Hz) the motor is running at, I think 1750 rpm. I have run it up to 90 for a few seconds, but don't really use it like that. If I need a faster speed, I move the belt. I usually use the VFD to do fine adjustments to the speed depending on what I'm doing. If it needs to be a little bit faster, I might go up to 70, if it needs to be a bit slower, I'll go down to 50 or 40. I never go below 30. If it is spinning too slow, the motor doesn't cool well. I'm not concerned with bearing life because I've never run it at the max spindle speed. It would have to be on the smallest spindle pulley and I just never need to spin it that fast. 1750 rpm (motor) on the small pulley would be super fast. Mine is almost always on the large pulley closest to the chuck.

Brandon, thanks for sharing. I'm going to look at a machine almost identical to yours tomorrow from a local seller. Anything special you'd want to know now that you've restored one? The one I'm looking at is a 117-E that's supposedly only been used for the past 30 years or so making custom pool cue sticks out of wood. Has the taper attachment which is a big deal to me, but is missing the cone cover unfortunately. How hard is it going to be to find parts for this machine if I end up buying it? Thanks!
@flpanhead
@flpanhead 9 жыл бұрын
Parts for these bigger machines are a little bit harder to find than for the smaller, more popular sizes, but they are still out there. I found most of the things I needed on ebay, but there are several forums on the web devoted to South Bend lathes and those guys can often find anything you need. The best advice I can give is to try to get as much tooling with it that you can. That stuff adds up and you can easily spend as much on chucks and tool holders as you did on the lathe itself.

No, thick grease would just get metal chips trapped in it. The proper lube would be an "open gear lubricant", but I didn't have any handy. I have seen a few folks use motorcycle chain lube because it leaves a semi-dry film. I coated them with some of that, but I need to look into the correct stuff. There is a big cast iron cover that goes over all those gears, but I left it off for the video.

Very Cool. Will the gears on the left end get grease when this is finished?
