I’ve been looking for actual footage of him throwing on the mound and I can finally see that he actually did have a good fastball. Looks like he slung it, probably had some movement too!

My Dad told me the story of watching Paige pitch ball in Merritton Ontario Canada during the 1940's. I guess Satchel was travelling through the Buffalo Area and got a call from a friend in St.Catharines, Ontario. Being there are significant Black Society in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario. I guess Satchel may have come for the Church Congregation of the legendary Harriet Tubman. Niagara was the last stop of the Underground Railroad, and many ex-Slave families resided in the Niagara Region. Merritton was a bustling Welland Canal town on the inland waterways.

Satchel was gifted with a fastball and height for his era, but you can see that he is primarily an elite pitcher first and foremost, showman second.

My what I thought was obvious point was that Ruth was Hall of Fame PITCHER as well as hitter. NOBODY who will ever live will be able to come CLOSE to the excellence Ruth showed on the mound (his last full pitch ing year was at age 23 by then winning 100 games). Please look at his pitching record. He could have won 350-400 games as a pitcher if he never picked up a bat.

I don’t even like baseball. I don’t have the patience. But I would watch any man or woman who has amazing talent. I watch all the Olympics, for example. Used to follow ABC sports like a junkie. Nothing like that, nowadays. No continuity. By the way, why no women’s baseball? Just askin’. Wink-wink,nudge-nudge.

I'm proud to know and say this is my great great uncle on my father's side. As a kid I use to wonder why I was so tall compared to my parents who are short. Though, on my mother's side there are tall ppl. I spoke with my grandmother(dad's mom) one day as a kid, and she asked me if I knew who my uncle was in a photograph. I didn't. She said this is your great great uncle Satchel Paige. Your grandfather's uncle. The first "black" baseball pitcher in the major leagues. Though we spell Paige without the i, because they didn't care that they started misspelling it on government documents. Ironically I always could throw a baseball, or football extremely well. And very athletic! My mother's father always wanted me to pitch, because he knew who I was too..... Unfortunately I didn't, and regret it strongly. Sleep peacefully Uncle Satchel💕🌹
