Do you know if any other harnesses will allow you to use this monopod this way without having to get the sharp shooter mount???
@stevenkersting349422 күн бұрын
Pretty much any sling strap that attaches via arca swiss clamp. You could use a QD strap and an arca swiss clamp with QD socket (like the Kirk QRC-1QD), or a Black rapid strap attached to an Acratech Swift Clamp... lots of options. Main thing is you will need a long foot or arca swiss rail on the lens.

Good video. I would not recommend buying this monopod. I purchased the SIRUI SVM165 Monopod Rapid System purchased in Apr 2024 from B&H Photo along with the extension. Even though it was heavier than my other monopods, it quickly became my go-to simply because of ease of use for easily getting the right height for (mostly) wildlife photography. The monopod was a solid 5-star until one day without warning, the lock position only showed some resistance and did not completely lock. I contacted Sirui service and they had me fill out a service sheet and gave me instructions and an RMA# to return it. Sirui has been unresponsive. Crickets! Nobody at Sirui seems interested in trying to honor their warranty.

But I have run the tests numerous additional times recording lossless raw, which raw digger can open directly. Hi nice video thanks! I just bought this monopod but I don't understand how you can adjust the resistance of the two segments to make them the same. Could you please help me?
@stevenkersting34942 ай бұрын
Sure, it's pretty easy; although it took me quite a while to figure out. Remove the four set screws from the lower collar (or back them out a good ways). Then turn that collar to increase/decrease the friction until it matches the upper collar's (non-adjustable) friction level. I found it easier to judge the friction levels/match with the twist lock not tightened fully, so they both slipped with the same lighter force. Reinstall/secure the set screws once the final adjustment is made. I imagine this adjustment may be required occasionally as the upper collar wears in over time... I have not encountered that yet. If you lose a set screw from the lower collar you can use one from the upper collar to replace it... the upper set screws don't really do anything important.
@enricocarocci2 ай бұрын
@@stevenkersting3494 OK, thanks! So I loosen the allen screws on the two joints, loosen these two until the tension is homogeneous and then tighten the screws again? Could I do some damage by doing this procedure? For example, by loosening the allens then the swiss lock system no longer works
@stevenkersting34942 ай бұрын
Only adjust the lower joint; the upper joint is not adjustable. There is no risk other than if you take it completely apart and loose a part.

Two questions 1) Did you consider iFootage 3? It does not have Rapid release / retract though it has snap on leg locks. 2) what shoulder harness do you use? Looks even load of heavy prime lens on both sides OP / TECH?
@stevenkersting34943 ай бұрын
I briefly considered the ifootage cobra strike 3 on kickstarter, but it is too light duty (11lb capacity). Their other tripods are otherwise unsuitable for me and very much like other's I have tried. The harness is a SharpShooter Industries SEH (self equalizing harness)... it is designed to share the load evenly between both sides. But it is not on the website yet; it's only being sold in limited qtty through direct inquiry/word-of-mouth... that should change soon though.

Still in use and still my favorite support. Sometimes a tripod is better (stationary), and sometimes I would prefer no support at all (lighter kit); but when moving and needing/wanting some additional support it's the best yet. I still wish it was lighter, and the Induro TH4 head makes that a lot worse (adds 50%); but it seems everything is a tradeoff of some sort.

Wow, good work on this, so now if i decided to go and shoot RAW for my RE work, i might just consider using RAW-HE* since it will save a lot more space and also i do a lot of HDR + Bracketting, hence a lot of pushing the boundaries of highlights and shadows a lot when needed.

Thank you, excellent info! One note (probably just a slip up): @3:30 Noise does not increase with signal. The two are independent. I think you mean both signal and noise increase with amplification such as increasing ISO in camera, or increasing exposure, brightness, shadows, etc in post processing. -- EDIT: 1 minute further into the video, I see you are comparing samples from the same image and the noise&signal did increase together. That's odd -- maybe this is a property of the RawDigger software? So to correct my comment above -- I think some context is necessary: noise generated by the sensor does not increase with signal being received. Though somehow the way RawDigger measures these spot samples, the two increase together. I'd really like to understand why that is. Perhaps something to do with Nikon's raw processing profiles adding curves or maybe some default profiles applied in lightroom/capture one? Very interesting.
@stevenkersting34944 ай бұрын
Thank you. In modern cameras like the Z9, shot noise is the predominant factor affecting visible image noise. Photon shot noise is a characteristic of light itself; and as the amount of light received increases, so does the amount of noise. However, the shot noise value is only the sq rt of the signal value, so at higher signal levels it is drowned out. I.e. 100:10 is a weaker SNR (weaker/noisier signal) compared to 10,000:100, even though the noise value is 10x higher in the second.. Other sources of noise are typically reduced as the signal/light increases, if there is any effect (e.g. read noise).

great video, and nice gun stock, but what is it, as not many are around, for obvious reasons, esp. with a long lens on!; PS, there is a use for the monopod feet, use it like a shooter uses a bipod, so you can lay it down on a table, or just to rest it, off of the shoulder harness.(or if birding, from a table, in a hide)
@stevenkersting34945 ай бұрын
Thanks, the stock is a SharpShooter Camera Mount ( sharpshooterindustries.com ); that one is specific to Nikon Z series cameras. We've been making/selling them internationally for 2 decades with no issues ever reported... but a little common sense is probably required. I.e. don't use it unannounced at a sports stadium; it is intended primarily for wildlife photography. The Camera Mount can also attach to a picatinny bipod in a couple of ways (optional); I use a UTG recon 360 bipod sometimes. I agree that the foot has some uses, it's just that I already have all of those uses covered with something I like better.

@stevenkersting34948 ай бұрын
If it is jumping to nearer subjects, then the only solution is to use a smaller focus area (Single point). A custom Wide-area (C1/C2) set to a small area or single point *with* subject detection might be a better choice. Keep in mind that subject tracking will wander ~ 4 focus points beyond the selected/defined area. Wide area w/o subject detection has a nearest priority bias which you probably do not want. You might also try 3D without subject recognition in order to select a player in a given jersey/team color, but that won't help separate the from others on the same team... it also won't focus on the face/eye, but unless the eye is larger in the FOV it's not going to anyway.
@eugenemccafferty22558 ай бұрын
@@stevenkersting3494 Thanks for the very prompt response, I’ll try wide-area small to see if it works.
@hautehussey8 ай бұрын
It doesn’t ignore the box completely. I think that should be mentioned. If anyone else is thinking of doing these tests, I’d switch to a specific subject (ie just humans or just birds), and try to use 3d representations without extra flat spaces on the side. Also, there’s a hypothesis that sending the screen out to hdmi for screen recording makes the autofocus perform slightly worse.
@stevenkersting34948 ай бұрын
I said the selected focus area (box) is more of a "focus priority area", not that it is entirely ignored. That is an interesting hypothesis. I can't imagine why that would be though; it's the same stream that is used for the viewfinder and live-view (LCD).
@hautehussey8 ай бұрын
@@stevenkersting3494 perhaps the overhead of having to encode the hdmi signal (with the extra parity information, etc..) takes away some of the computing power from other tasks? Maybe.

Did you realize you were doing those tests in DX mode?
@stevenkersting34948 ай бұрын
Yes, I did notice that... it doesn't really change anything.
@MadManTnT8 ай бұрын
The delay is affecting the modes with subject recognition because at some point in your move the camera loses the subject, then its acting like a mode where subject recognition is off for some time, then it detects the face and eyes and it goes back to ignoring the delay
@stevenkersting34948 ай бұрын
Nice catch. I think it was probably the "nearest priority" that the wide area modes have when subject detection is inactive (off or can't find a subject)... it really didn't want to shift focus to the farther subject and acted a bit slow/dumb. But since I couldn't reliably duplicate the behavior, and cause/eliminate it, I didn't specifically comment on it.
@JGZphotography8 ай бұрын
Sorry, but I am unipressed with your Nikon focusing demonstrations. My Canon R3 is much faster, nearly instantaneous, when moving to near and far subjects. I would think Nikon is better than what was recorded.
@stevenkersting34948 ай бұрын
That was the point; I had to use a particularly slow focusing lens to show that the final focus position is not predetermined (open loop). Most of my other lenses will snap into focus too quick to show the autofocus characteristics... i.e. the lens is faster than my reflexes are.
@hautehussey8 ай бұрын
This was intentionally slow, also it wasn’t the ideal settings (with all subjects and dx mode, etc..).

Depends on the mode and the situation... if the camera cannot achieve focus it may switch to CDAF, and pinpoint/AF-S uses CDAF trim (confirmation/refinement). You can tell when it uses CDAF as the focus "wobbles" in/out a bit.
